Career
Ranganathan is a distant relative of R. Sundarrajan and worked as an assistant director under him and S. A. Chandrasekhar. He initially began his career as actor portraying lead role in Oyilattam (1991) directed by Sundarrajan.{{cite AV media| url-status = live| archive-url = https://ghostarchive.org/varchive/youtube/20211209/JgbuKiiRhzA| archive-date = 2021-12-09| url = https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JgbuKiiRhzA| title = விஜய்யை விமர்சித்தால் விடமாட்டேன் - இயக்குனர் சி. ரங்கநாதன் {{!}} Exclusive Interview | website=YouTube}}{{cbignore}} He then became a director and made three consecutive successful Tamil films between 1996 and 1997 with the Vijay-starrer Coimbatore Mappillai, Tata Birla and Aahaa Enna Porutham all ending up as profitable ventures. By late 1997, he had started work on a new film titled Indru Mudhal Happy featuring Jayaram, Goundamani and Senthil in leading roles.{{cite web|url=http://www.geocities.ws/gokima/cinjan.html |title=Gokul'S Home Page |publisher=Geocities.ws |accessdate=2015-09-29}} By April 1998, the cast of the film was changed to include Pandiarajan and Preetha, though the film did not complete production.{{cite web|url=http://www.geocities.ws/gokima/gcnapril.htm |title=Gokul'S Home Page |publisher=Geocities.ws |accessdate=2015-09-29}}{{Cite web|url=http://www.minnoviyam.com/articles/preview98.html|archive-url = https://web.archive.org/web/19990219211157/http://www.minnoviyam.com/articles/preview98.html|archive-date = 19 February 1999|title = Cardano coin verwachting 2021-the best payaone}}
He then launched another project titled Saamy Koduththa Varam in August 1998, with Napolean, Vignesh and Preetha starring. Despite a grand launch event, the film did not finish production.{{cite web |url=http://www.dinakaran.com/cinema/english/cinenews/11-07-98/nepolian.htm |title=Dinakaran |website=www.dinakaran.com |access-date=12 January 2022 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20050306184646/http://www.dinakaran.com/cinema/english/cinenews/11-07-98/nepolian.htm |archive-date=6 March 2005 |url-status=dead}}{{Cite web|url=https://groups.google.com/forum/#!searchin/soc.culture.malaysia/tamil$20cinema$20news/soc.culture.malaysia/IK1QB4s7svQ/vgNXGIm7utMJ|title = Redirecting to Google Groups}} Similarly the film, Love Pannunga Sir featuring Livingston and Preetha, did not progress despite being announced in mid-1998.{{cite web |url=http://www.dinakaran.com/cinema/english/interviews/22-07-98/preethaa.htm |title=Dinakaran |website=www.dinakaran.com |access-date=12 January 2022 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20040624175706/http://www.dinakaran.com/cinema/english/interviews/22-07-98/preethaa.htm |archive-date=24 June 2004 |url-status=dead}}{{Cite web |url=http://reocities.com/Hollywood/lot/2330/rangan.htm |title=Gokul's Home Page |access-date=10 October 2015 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20170605172119/http://reocities.com/Hollywood/lot/2330/rangan.htm |archive-date=5 June 2017 |url-status=dead }} In 2001, he began another project titled Vandharu Jeicharu with television actor Akash and Uma. Bhagyaraj in the making of Vilakku Vacha Nerathula.{{cite web|url=http://movies.rediff.com/report/2010/mar/19/south-k-bhagyaraj-on-writing-for-television.htm |title=Taking Tamil television by storm — Rediff.com Movies |publisher=Movies.rediff.com |date=2010-03-19 |accessdate=2015-09-29}}
