CGTN Russian (formerly CCTV International Russian ({{langx|ru|Центральное Телевидение Китая Международный канал на Pусском языке}}, Tsentral'noye Televideniye Kitaya Mezhdunarodnyy kanal na Russkom yazyke), {{zh|first=s|s=中国国际电视台俄语频道|p=Zhōngguó zhōngyāng diànshìtái Éyǔ guójì píndào}}; often shorted as CCTV-Русский) is a Russian language international news, entertainment, and education television channel owned by China Central Television.

Launch

The Russian-language channel was launched on September 10, 2009, on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between Beijing and Moscow. CCTV Russian is broadcast through Chinasat 6B and EB-9A, which cover the Asian-Pacific Region, Middle East and Europe. The channel is aimed at about 300 million viewers in the post-Soviet nations (12 Commonwealth of Independent States members and three Baltic nations), and Eastern European countries.{{cite news |title= CCTV to launch Russian channel |url= http://english.cctv.com/program/newshour/20090903/108306.shtml |date= 2009-09-03 |accessdate=19 September 2009}} Since 2016, the channel is available on SPB TV's Belt and Road TV application.{{cite news |date=2016-05-31 |title=SPB TV and Shanghai Media Group to distribute more Chinese content worldwide |url=http://spbtv.com/press/press-releases/SPB-TV-and-Shanghai-Media-Group.html |url-status=dead |access-date=2022-11-19 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20161102070434/http://spbtv.com/press/press-releases/SPB-TV-and-Shanghai-Media-Group.html |archive-date=2016-11-02}}{{cite news |title=CCTV Russian on the Belt and Road TV |url=https://cn.spbtv.com/channels/cctv-ru |url-status=dead |access-date=2022-11-19 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20190410113600/https://cn.spbtv.com/channels/cctv-ru |archive-date=2019-04-10}}

Controversies

In 2020, in a report on the Two Sessions (plenary sessions of the National People's Congress and Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference), CGTN Russian used "Party of crooks and thieves", a derogative term to describe United Russia, in its video to introduce China's efforts to contain corruption, resulting in criticism from some Russian media.{{cite news |last1=Kovalev |first1=Alexey |author-link=Alexey Kovalev (journalist) |last2=Vladislav |first2=Gorin |date=2020-07-27 |title=Это полный фейспалм Китай начал агрессивно продвигать себя через российские СМИ, но результат получается комичный.
