Cake and Pie is the third solo studio album by Lisa Loeb. It was released in 2002 through A&M Records.
Promotion
The first single "The Way It Really Is" was a moderate hit among college radio. "We Could Still Belong Together" was also included on the soundtrack to Legally Blonde. The album's single "Someone You Should Know" was released in November 2001, and the song became a hit in Japan.{{cite news |issn=0006-2510 |work=Billboard |title=Loeb blends musical styles on A&M's 'Cake' |url={{GBurl|JBAEAAAAMBAJ|p=14}} |publication-date=February 23, 2002 |page=14 |department=Artists & Music |first=Jim |last=Bessman |volume=114 |number=8}} In the US, it received moderate airplay on Triple A, Adult Top 40 and Pop radio formats, though never officially charted.
The music video for "Someone You Should Know" was played heavily on VH1 upon its release in early 2002.{{citation needed|date=August 2016}} "Underdog" peaked at #39 on Billboard{{'}}s Adult Top 40 chart in the fall of 2002.
Release and reception
The album was released on A&M, at that time the sister label of Geffen Records, which had released Loeb's previous two records (Tails and Firecracker).{{cite magazine |magazine=MusicWorld |title=Lisa Loeb moves her music to the front burner |url=https://www.bmi.com/news/entry/20020225lisa_loeb_lisa_loeb_moves_her_music_to_the_front_burner |first=Kevin |last=Zimmerman |date=February 24, 2002}} Loeb was moved to A&M after Geffen became part of Universal Music Group in 1999. The singer began working on Cake and Pie in 1999.{{cite news |first=Erika |last=Gonzalez |work=Seattle Post-Intelligencer |agency=Rocky Mountain News |date=February 20, 2003 |title=Folk-popster Lisa Loeb won't be an 'Underdog' for record labels |url=https://www.seattlepi.com/ae/music/article/Folk-popster-Lisa-Loeb-won-t-be-an-Underdog-for-1107934.php}} It was originally scheduled to debut in 2000, but the album wasn't released until 2002.{{cite news |issn=1937-4100 |work=Wilmington Star-News |title=Say 'Hello' again to Lisa Loeb |url=https://www.starnewsonline.com/article/NC/20021129/News/605097650/WM |date=November 29, 2002 |first=Kristi |last=Singer}}
Cake and Pie did not receive any major backing or promotion from Loeb's record label which led to the album's commercial failure.{{cite news |work=Houston Chronicle |title=Lisa Loeb mixes her Kitty with her 'Cake and Pie' |url=https://www.chron.com/entertainment/music/article/Lisa-Loeb-mixes-her-Kitty-with-her-Cake-and-Pie-2089278.php |first=Rod |last=Harmon |date=December 25, 2002 |agency=Knight-Ridder}} A&M and Loeb clashed over the music video concept for "Underdog", so the record label did not fund the shooting of the video. Loeb subsequently negotiated a release from A&M and joined Artemis Records.
Loeb bought the rights to the masters of the songs, and the album was reissued and renamed Hello Lisa. The songs "We Could Still Belong Together", "She's Falling Apart", and "Too Fast Driving" were cut from Hello Lisa and replaced with "Did That", "What Am I Supposed to Say" and "Take Me Back".
