It was described by Isaac Ginsburg in 1951, originally under the genus Gordiichthys.Ginsburg, I., 1951 (30 Sept.) [ref. 1804] The eels of the northern Gulf Coast of the United States and some related species. Texas Journal of Science v. 3 (no. 3): 431-485. It is a marine, tropical eel which is known from the eastern Gulf of Mexico, in the western Atlantic Ocean. It dwells at a depth range of {{convert|22|to|36|m|ft}}. Males can reach a maximum total length of {{convert|80.1|cm|in|abbr=|sp=us}}.
