He played college basketball for the Michigan Wolverines. LeVert was originally drafted by the Indiana Pacers but was traded to the Brooklyn Nets on draft night. He later played for the Pacers and the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Early life

LeVert grew up in Columbus but moved to Pickerington, Ohio in second grade. One of his teammates at Pickerington High School Central was future Ohio State forward Jae'Sean Tate.{{cite news |last1=Landis |first1=Bill |title=Ohio State basketball: How freshman Jae'Sean Tate became a vital part of Buckeyes' present and future |url=https://www.cleveland.com/osu/2015/03/ohio_state_basketball_jaesean_1.html |access-date=June 5, 2018 |work=The Plain-Dealer |date=March 11, 2015}} As a high school senior, he led Pickerington Central to a 26–2 record and the 2012 OHSAA Division I state championship. LeVert was a 2012 Associated Press All-Ohio Second Team high school basketball player and the 2012 Columbus Dispatch Metro Player of the Year for Pickerington High School Central. He was not heavily recruited in high school and his only official visit was to Alabama State.{{cite web|url=https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/ncaab/bigten/2014/10/16/michigan-wolverines-caris-levert-nik-stauskas-trey-burke-guard/17387247/|title=Caris LeVert aims to be next Michigan guard to step up|access-date=October 21, 2014|date=October 16, 2014|author=Snyder, Mark|work=USA Today}} He committed to play basketball for John Groce and the Ohio Bobcats men's basketball program in November 2011. When Groce got hired by Illinois Fighting Illini men's basketball in March 2012, LeVert got lost in the shuffle and decided to commit to Michigan.{{cite web|url=http://collegebasketballtalk.nbcsports.com/2014/03/03/caris-levert-would-be-at-illinois-if-john-groce-had-picked-up-the-phone/|title=Caris LeVert would be at Illinois if John Groce had picked up the phone|access-date=March 13, 2014|date=March 3, 2014|author=Dauster, Rob|publisher=NBC Sports}} Ironically, Groce's 2011–12 Ohio Bobcats' upset of the 2011–12 Michigan team in the 2012 NCAA Division I men's basketball tournament was probably the reason that Groce was hired by Illinois and LeVert withdrew his National Letter of Intent to play for Ohio.{{cite web|url=https://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/ncaab-the-dagger/caris-levert-development-michigan-verge-big-ten-title-201211409--ncaab.html|title=Caris LeVert's development has Michigan on the verge of a Big Ten title|access-date=March 13, 2014|date=February 23, 2014|author=Eisenberg, Jeff|publisher=Yahoo!
