During his secondary school years, Chen, unfortunately, contracted a corneal infection that led to a partial loss of vision in his left eye. Initially, a doctor advised the removal of his left eye to prevent the infection from reaching his brain, but this procedure was not carried out. After nearly eight years of searching for a cure, Chen received a partial corneal transplant, operated by Dr Julian Theng during his time in the army, and has since recovered 75% of his vision in his left eye.{{cite web |title=Edmund Chen recounts his shock when doctor said son Yixi's eye had to be removed |url=https://www.asiaone.com/entertainment/edmund-chen-recounts-his-shock-when-doctor-said-son-yixis-eye-had-be-removed |website=AsiaOne |access-date=26 August 2023 |language=en |date=28 June 2021}}{{Cite news |date=8 July 2011 |title=More choosing partial cornea transplants |url=https://eresources.nlb.gov.sg/newspapers/digitised/article/straitstimes20110708-1.2.52.15 |url-access=registration |work=The Straits Times |pages=10}}
