History

Oil and gas deposits were discovered near Chilov island by Russian Rear Admiral Count Mark Voynovich while he led an expedition to the Caspian Sea in 1781.[http://www.azer.com/aiweb/categories/magazine/ai102_folder/102_articles/102_oil_chronology.html Oil exploration in Azerbaijan][http://rusnavy.com/history/hrn4-e.htm Rear Admiral Count Mark Voynovich]

In 1944, a geological expedition was established at the Azerbaijan Academy of Sciences. This expedition began geological explorations on Chilov Island. The first oil well there was drilled by Agagurban Aliyev.[https://hafiztimes.com/kul%C9%99k-bir-az-da-qalxsa-c%C9%99s%C9%99dimiz-d%C9%99-tapilmayacaqdi-neft-daslari-nec%C9%99-k%C9%99sf-olunmusudu-musahib%C9%99-fotolar/ “Külək bir az da qalxsa, cəsədimiz də tapılmayacaqdı” | “Neft daşları” necə kəşf olundu (MÜSAHİBƏ-FOTOLAR)] hafiztimes.com 24.11.2017

In 1992-1993, Russian troops were completely withdrawn from the island.
