Overview

In March 2015, it was announced that composer Ludwig Göransson would score Creed, marking the second feature-length film collaboration between Göransson and director Ryan Coogler after Fruitvale Station (2013).{{cite web |title=Ludwig Göransson to Score 'Rocky' Spinoff 'Creed' |url=http://filmmusicreporter.com/2015/03/06/ludwig-goransson-to-score-rocky-spinoff-creed/|website=Film Music Reporter |archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20151123193205/http://filmmusicreporter.com/2015/03/06/ludwig-goransson-to-score-rocky-spinoff-creed/ |archivedate=November 23, 2015 |date=March 6, 2015 |accessdate=November 23, 2015}} Influenced by 1970s culture and the musical legacy of the Rocky film series, Coogler noted that "the music was a big focal point" for the film, stating, "'Eye of the Tiger', 'No Easy Way Out', all those songs were a massive hit. And we embraced that. We recorded original songs for the movie."{{cite magazine|last1=Cobo |first1=Leila |title=Will 'Creed' Song 'Fighting Stronger' Be the New 'Eye of the Tiger'? |url=http://www.billboard.com/articles/columns/the-juice/6731011/creed-fighting-stronger-new-eye-of-the-tiger-rocky |magazine=Billboard |publisher=Prometheus Global Media |archiveurl=https://archive.today/20160916134843/http://www.billboard.com/articles/columns/the-juice/6731011/creed-fighting-stronger-new-eye-of-the-tiger-rocky |archivedate=September 16, 2016 |date=October 18, 2015 |url-status=live |accessdate=September 16, 2016 |df=mdy }} Göransson brought in an array of artists to modernize the orchestral aspects of the soundtrack. "The first name that came to mind was obviously Meek Mill, because we needed a voice from Philly," said Göransson. "For me that was an obvious choice for the big training montage. It's all full orchestral, and it has some dark 808s under it. In the middle there are all these dirt bikes coming out, and there's a 45-second rap verse that Meek Mill is doing over that."{{cite web|last1=Corrigan |first1=Graham |title=From Childish Gambino to 'Creed': Producer Ludwig Goransson's Grand Vision |url=http://pigeonsandplanes.com/2015/12/creed-movie-soundtrack-ludwig/ |website=Pigeons & Planes |publisher=Complex |archiveurl=https://archive.today/20160916135348/http://pigeonsandplanes.com/news/2015/12/creed-movie-soundtrack-ludwig |archivedate=September 16, 2016 |date=December 2, 2015 |url-status=live |accessdate=September 16, 2016 |df=mdy }} Other musicians that recorded with Göransson specifically for the film include Donald Glover, Future, Vince Staples, and Jhené Aiko.

A music video for Mill's "Lord Knows" was created as a companion to the film. Released on November 20, 2015, the Spike Jordan-directed video features footage from the film edited together with footage of Mill and Tory Lanez performing the song.{{cite web |title=Atlantic Records Reveals "CREED: ORIGINAL MOTION PICTURE SOUNDTRACK" Available Today |url=http://www.marketwired.com/press-release/atlantic-records-reveals-creed-original-motion-picture-soundtrack-available-today-2075890.htm |website=Marketwired |publisher=OMERS |archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20151203030533/http://www.marketwired.com/press-release/atlantic-records-reveals-creed-original-motion-picture-soundtrack-available-today-2075890.htm |archivedate=December 3, 2015 |date=November 20, 2015 |accessdate=December 2, 2015}} Both of Mill's respective tracks that appear on the film's soundtrack, the former, along with "Check", were originally listed on his sophomore album, Dreams Worth More Than Money, released earlier that year.

Actress Tessa Thompson, who portrays singer/songwriter Bianca in the film, was involved early with the film's preparation in order to write music for her character with Göransson.{{cite web|last1=McCue |first1=Michelle |title=Ludwig Goransson Discusses His Score For Ryan Coogler's CREED |url=http://www.wearemoviegeeks.com/2015/12/ludwig-goransson-discusses-his-score-for-ryan-cooglers-creed/ |website=WeAreMovieGeeks |publisher=Lanier Media |archiveurl=https://archive.today/20160916135806/http://www.wearemoviegeeks.com/2015/12/ludwig-goransson-discusses-his-score-for-ryan-cooglers-creed/ |archivedate=September 16, 2016 |date=December 1, 2015 |url-status=live |accessdate=September 16, 2016 |df=mdy }} "We spent two weeks in Los Angeles in a studio basically writing from morning until night," said Thompson.
