He also served as the chief executive officer of Aegis Group PLC from 1994 until 1999. He was a board member at Guinness PLC, and the group managing director of United Distillers from 1990 to 1993. For 20 years, he served at Procter & Gamble, in senior positions in the United Kingdom, Germany, and North America.

A native of Bromley,England & Wales, Civil Registration Birth Index, 1916-2007 Greater London, Davis earned a bachelor's degree from Oriel College, Oxford. He is the brother of former McKinsey & Company managing director Ian Davis and the Appeal Court judge Sir Nigel Davis.
