History

The Daily Sabah was established in 2014 when a highly-antagonistic political climate reigned in Turkish politics. After the conflict in December 2013 between the Gülen movement, a religious civil society organization with some political aspirations, and the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP), the Gülen movement's Today's Zaman turned into an ardent critic of the ruling AKP. To balance the critical discourse against the AKP by Today's Zaman and Hürriyet Daily News, a secular critic of the AKP, Daily Sabah emerged as a supportive voice of the AKP in the English language.{{cite news|title=New English daily offers Turkish government perspective|url=http://www.al-monitor.com/pulse/politics/2014/02/turkey-new-english-newspaper-government-perspective.html|access-date=30 June 2016|publisher=Al-Monitor|archive-date=16 June 2016|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20160616033406/http://www.al-monitor.com/pulse/politics/2014/02/turkey-new-english-newspaper-government-perspective.html|url-status=live}}{{Cite web |title=Daily Sabah |url=https://www.eurotopics.net/en/156478/daily-sabah |access-date=2023-05-29 |website=eurotopics.net |language=en |archive-date=2023-02-18 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20230218044042/https://www.eurotopics.net/en/156478/daily-sabah |url-status=live }}

Editorial policy and viewpoints

Daily Sabah describes itself as "committed to the democracy, the rule of law, human rights and liberty".{{cite web|title=About Us|url=http://www.dailysabah.com/static/about-us|publisher=www.dailysabah.com|access-date=30 June 2016|archive-date=9 September 2019|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20190909112429/https://www.dailysabah.com/static/about-us|url-status=live}} However, the paper is described as a mouthpiece of the AKP by Foreign Policy.{{cite web|title=Army of Spin|url=https://foreignpolicy.com/2014/12/09/army-of-spin-turkey-media-erdogan/|work=Foreign Policy|access-date=30 June 2016|archive-date=8 April 2019|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20190408045402/https://foreignpolicy.com/2014/12/09/army-of-spin-turkey-media-erdogan/|url-status=live}}

According to the German newspaper Der Spiegel, Daily Sabah is critical of the Gülen movement, which the AKP government accuses of trying to overthrow the government in an attempted coup in 2016.{{Cite web|url=http://www.spiegel.de/spiegel/print/d-124276494.html|title=TÜRKEI: Die Rache der Brüder|last=Popp|first=Maximilian|date=6 January 2014|website=Der Spiegel|language=de|access-date=2017-04-29|archive-date=2018-08-17|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20180817181550/http://www.spiegel.de/spiegel/print/d-124276494.html|url-status=live}} Daily Sabah has been described as using transparent, ill-formed, and Turkish-style propaganda to advance the AKP government's version of events by Der Spiegel.

Criticism

In March 2017, Jeroen Lenaers of the European Parliament called Daily Sabah "hate press" and tried to prohibit the distribution of Daily Sabah in parliamentary sessions. The European Parliament has made accusations about the lack of freedom of speech and expression in Turkey, and Daily Sabah defends the AKP government's human rights record. Daily Sabah has said the decision to prohibit its distribution was a violation of the freedoms of the press and expressions. Meanwhile, the EU Affairs Minister for Turkey Ömer Çelik, who is also a member of AKP per se, said the following about the issue: "The European Parliament's ban on the freedom of press is a tragic event for the future of Europe."{{Cite news|url=https://www.aa.com.tr/en/europe/european-parliament-bans-turkeys-daily-sabah-/778435|title=European Parliament bans Turkey's Daily Sabah|access-date=2018-10-03|archive-date=2018-10-03|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20181003222505/https://www.aa.com.tr/en/europe/european-parliament-bans-turkeys-daily-sabah-/778435|url-status=live}}{{Cite web|url=https://www.trtworld.com/europe/european-parliament-bans-distribution-of-turkish-daily-at-the-building-323035|title=European Parliament bans distribution of Turkish daily at its building|publisher=TRT World|access-date=2018-10-03|archive-date=2018-10-03|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20181003181703/https://www.trtworld.com/europe/european-parliament-bans-distribution-of-turkish-daily-at-the-building-323035|url-status=live}}{{Cite news |url=https://www.dailysabah.com/eu-affairs/2017/03/24/european-parliament-bans-daily-sabah-but-does-not-know-exactly-why |title=European Parliament bans Daily Sabah but does not know exactly why |work=Daily Sabah |access-date=2018-10-03 |archive-date=2018-10-03 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20181003181814/https://www.dailysabah.com/eu-affairs/2017/03/24/european-parliament-bans-daily-sabah-but-does-not-know-exactly-why |url-status=live }}{{Cite news|url=https://www.aa.com.tr/en/europe/feto-behind-ban-on-daily-sabah-in-european-parliament/778956|title='FETO behind ban' on Daily Sabah in European parliament|access-date=2018-10-03|archive-date=2018-10-03|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20181003221033/https://www.aa.com.tr/en/europe/feto-behind-ban-on-daily-sabah-in-european-parliament/778956|url-status=live}}{{Cite web |title='FETÖ behind ban' on Daily Sabah in European parliament |url=https://www.yenisafak.com/en/world/feto-behind-ban-on-daily-sabah-in-european-parliament-2633409 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20170324164532/https://www.yenisafak.com/en/world/feto-behind-ban-on-daily-sabah-in-european-parliament-2633409 |archive-date=24 March 2017 |website=Yeni Şafak |language=en |access-date=16 August 2020}}{{Cite web|url=http://www.hurriyetdailynews.com/european-parliament-president-bans-distribution-of-daily-sabah-at-parliament-111171|title=European Parliament President bans distribution of Daily Sabah at parliament - World News|website=Hürriyet Daily News|date=23 March 2017 |language=en|access-date=2018-10-03|archive-date=2018-10-03|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20181003220912/http://www.hurriyetdailynews.com/european-parliament-president-bans-distribution-of-daily-sabah-at-parliament-111171|url-status=live}}{{Cite news|url=http://www.anews.com.tr/world/2017/03/31/european-parliament-violated-freedom-of-press-with-daily-sabah-ban-turkish-law-platform-says|title=European Parliament violated freedom of press with Daily Sabah ban, Turkish Law Platform says|publisher=anews|access-date=2018-10-03|language=en|archive-date=2018-10-03|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20181003220915/http://www.anews.com.tr/world/2017/03/31/european-parliament-violated-freedom-of-press-with-daily-sabah-ban-turkish-law-platform-says|url-status=live}}
