On Metacritic, the first season has a score of 64 out of 100 based on 10 reviews.{{cite web |title=Dave - Season 1 Reviews |url=https://www.metacritic.com/tv/dave/season-1 |access-date=May 12, 2020 |website=Metacritic}} On Rotten Tomatoes, it has an approval rating of 77% with an average score of 6.7 out of 10 based on 22 reviews. The website's critical consensus is, "DAVE can be just as off-putting as Lil Dicky's rap persona with its abundance of genitalia jokes and self-aggrandizement, but beneath the raunchy veneer is a surprisingly self-aware show with a sweet core."{{cite web |title=Dave: Season 1 |url=https://www.rottentomatoes.com/tv/dave/s01 |access-date=August 24, 2021 |website=Rotten Tomatoes}}
After mixed reviews for the first few episodes that were previewed by media outlets, the second half of the season was positively received by The Guardian, IndieWire, Financial Times, and Rolling Stone.{{Cite news |last=Mangan |first=Lucy |date=May 10, 2020 |title=Dave review – rap comedy sees life imitate art, one penis joke at a time |language=en-GB |work=The Guardian |url=https://www.theguardian.com/tv-and-radio/2020/may/10/dave-review-rap-comedy-sees-life-imitate-art-one-penis-joke-at-a-time |access-date=May 12, 2020 |issn=0261-3077}}{{Cite web |last=Travers |first=Ben |date=April 30, 2020 |title='Dave' Finale Review: Season 1 Is Smart Enough to Want to Get Better, Even After Hitting It Big |url=https://www.indiewire.com/2020/04/fx-dave-finale-review-episode-10-spoilers-1202228302/ |access-date=May 12, 2020 |website=IndieWire |language=en}}{{Cite magazine |last=Sepinwall |first=Alan |date=April 30, 2020 |title='Dave' Season One Finale: The Real Lil Dicky Stands Up |url=https://www.rollingstone.com/tv/tv-features/dave-season-one-finale-recap-990533/ |magazine=Rolling Stone |language=en-US |access-date=May 12, 2020}} Reviewers noted the expansion of the series' sources of humor, its dedication to character development, and improved emotional depth. At the end of its first season, Dave averaged 5.32 million viewers per episode, making it the most popular comedy in FX's history.{{Cite web |last=Hersko |first=Tyler |date=May 11, 2020 |title='Dave' Gets Season 2 After Beating 'Atlanta' Viewership, but There's a Big Catch |url=https://www.indiewire.com/2020/05/dave-renewed-for-season-2-1202230634/ |access-date=May 12, 2020 |website=IndieWire |language=en}} While most of the characters and actors have been praised, the "Lil Dicky" character in the show has been negatively received. Many reviewers have noted that while the character's success is the center of the show, his poor treatment of his friends makes him difficult to root for.{{Cite web |last=Travers |first=Ben |date=March 4, 2020 |title='Dave' Review: Lil Dicky's Uneven FXX Comedy Is More Endearing Than You Might Expect |url=https://www.indiewire.com/2020/03/dave-review-fx-lil-dicky-dave-burd-1202214989/ |website=IndieWire}}{{Cite web |last=Fienberg |first=Daniel |date=March 3, 2020 |title='Dave': TV Review |url=https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/review/dave-review-1282155 |website=The Hollywood Reporter}} Additionally, the first season has been criticized for exploring and idealizing fame over art. Daniel D'Addario of Variety unfavorably compared the show to Atlanta, another entry from FX. D'Addario states "When Donald Glover made an FX show about characters trying to break into the music industry, it was 'Atlanta,' among the most expansive, richly imaginative shows of the century so far. When Lil Dicky does it, it's a show whose breaks from flatly telling us about his character's private parts tend to follow a linear trajectory: Lil Dicky, a ditherer with more zeal for fame than true creative ambition, ends up trying something, it goes viral, everyone loves it."{{Cite web |last=D'Addario |first=Daniel |date=February 28, 2020 |title='Dave': TV Review |url=https://variety.com/2020/tv/reviews/dave-lil-dicky-fx-1203518235/ |website=Variety}}
