The Defence Futures, formerly Development, Concepts and Doctrine Centre (DCDC) is the United Kingdom (UK) Ministry of Defence's (MOD's) think tank.
History
The DCDC, originally called the Joint Doctrine and Concepts Centre (JDCC), was established as a result of the 1998 Strategic Defence Review. The UK recognised that it needed to have a clearer long-term vision of the way in which it expected it forces and their methods of operation to develop.{{cite news|title=The background to the Development, Concepts and Doctrine Centre|url=http://www.mod.uk/DefenceInternet/FactSheets/DcdcBackground.htm|archive-url=http://webarchive.nationalarchives.gov.uk/20080205163222/http://www.mod.uk/DefenceInternet/FactSheets/DcdcBackground.htm|url-status=dead|archive-date=5 February 2008|accessdate=30 May 2016|agency=British Ministry of Defence|date=5 February 2008}}
Programme SOLARIUM – Strategic Command’s transformation programme – launched the new Integration Design Authority (IDA) on 1 July 2024. Due to this transformation the DCDC has evolved into a new organisation – Defence Futures, part of the IDA.{{cite web |url=https://www.gov.uk/government/groups/development-concepts-and-doctrine-centre |title=Development, Concepts and Doctrine Centre |author= |date=1 July 2024 |website=gov.uk |publisher=UK Ministry of Defence |access-date=30 July 2024 |quote=Following the launch of Strategic Command's Integration Design Authority on 1 July 2024, the Development, Concepts and Doctrine Centre (DCDC) has evolved into a new organisation – Defence Futures.}}
Structure
The DCDC is headed by a two-star officer, located at Shrivenham and is under the UK's Strategic Command but reports to the Vice Chief of the Defence Staff (VCDS) who sets its priorities and outputs.{{cite news|title=Development, Concepts and Doctrine Centre: the MOD's independent think tank|url=https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/507544/20160217_DCDC_Pamphlet_Web__2_.pdf|accessdate=30 May 2016|agency=British Ministry of Defence|date=14 March 2016}}
