Etymology
The genus, Deschampsia, was named for Louis Auguste Deschamps{{cite book|url=https://www.biodiversitylibrary.org/page/394170#page/175/mode/1up|author= Palisot de Beauvois, A.M.F.J.|date= 1812|title= Essai d'une Nouvelle Agrostographie|volume= 1812|page=91}} who served as surgeon (and botanist) in the expedition of d'Entrecasteaux in search of La Pérouse, while the specific epithet, chapmanii, honours F.R. Chapman who collected the type specimen.
Conservation status
This species has been listed as "Not Threatened" (2004, 2009, 2012) under the New Zealand Threat Classification System,{{Cite web|url=http://nzpcn.org.nz/flora_details.aspx?ID=1783|title=Deschampsia chapmanii {{!}} New Zealand Plant Conservation Network|website=nzpcn.org.nz|access-date=2020-02-09}} and again in 2018 with a further comment that it was safe overseas.
