Landfill controversy

A controversial proposal to build a landfill in the area caused protests and demonstrations from environmental groups in Auckland in the early 2020s.{{Cite web|date=14 June 2021|title=Auckland's controversial Dome Valley landfill approved following split vote |url= https://www.stuff.co.nz/environment/300332763/aucklands-controversial-dome-valley-landfill-approved-following-split-vote |access-date=14 December 2021|website=Stuff |language=en}}{{Cite news|title=Environmental groups and iwi protest against Dome Valley landfill plans |language=en|work=Newshub |url=https://www.newshub.co.nz/home/new-zealand/2021/07/environmental-groups-and-iwi-protest-against-dome-valley-landfill-plans.html|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20210703183022/https://www.newshub.co.nz/home/new-zealand/2021/07/environmental-groups-and-iwi-protest-against-dome-valley-landfill-plans.html|url-status=dead|archive-date=3 July 2021|access-date=14 December 2021}}{{Cite web|date=17 July 2020|title=Hundreds march in Auckland CBD for hīkoi protesting Dome Valley dump proposal|url=https://www.stuff.co.nz/environment/300059289/hundreds-march-in-auckland-cbd-for-hkoi-protesting-dome-valley-dump-proposal|access-date=14 December 2021|website=Stuff |language=en}} It was approved despite stiff opposition, and Waste Management New Zealand would construct and operate 60 hectares of landfill after given consent to do so.{{Cite web|date=15 June 2021 |title=Dome Valley landfill plan: Opponents prepare to take case to court|url=https://www.rnz.co.nz/news/national/444740/dome-valley-landfill-plan-opponents-prepare-to-take-case-to-court|access-date=14 December 2021|website=RNZ |language=en-nz}}

It was controversial because it would have an ecological impact on the area; it would contaminate local waterways, such as the Kaipara Harbour's water catchment. Waste Management New Zealand further had an application for a plan change to use 1000 hectares of land in the Dome Valley site recognised as a "landfill precinct".{{Cite web|date=10 September 2021|title=Dome Valley landfill: Auckland Council declines Waste Management plan change|url=https://www.rnz.co.nz/news/national/451235/dome-valley-landfill-auckland-council-declines-waste-management-plan-change|access-date=14 December 2021|website=RNZ |language=en-nz}}
