Donald Brian MacIntyre (born 1955) is a former Canadian politician and criminal from Alberta. He was elected in the 2015 Alberta general election to the Legislative Assembly of Alberta, where he represented the electoral district of Innisfail-Sylvan Lake.{{cite web|url=http://www.sylvanlakenews.com/news/291717871.html|title=Sylvan Lake News - Don MacIntyre seeking Wildrose nomination|publisher=sylvanlakenews.com|accessdate=2015-05-24|url-status=dead|archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20150518065448/http://www.sylvanlakenews.com/news/291717871.html|archivedate=2015-05-18}} MacIntyre resigned on February 5, 2018 after being charged with sexual assault and "sexual interference" (i.e., touching a minor for a sexual purpose).{{cite news |author= |date=February 9, 2018 |title=Former Alberta MLA Don MacIntyre resigned following sexual assault, sexual interference charges |url=https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/calgary/alberta-innisfail-sylvan-lake-mla-don-mcintyre-sexual-assault-interference-1.4528409 |work=CBC News |location=Calgary, Alberta |access-date=March 18, 2024}} On January 11, 2019, MacIntyre pleaded guilty to sexual interference and was sentenced to three years in prison, while the charge of sexual assault was withdrawn.
Views on climate change
On January 2, 2017, MacIntyre — while speaking to the press — asserted that human activity is not the primary cause of climate change.{{Cite news|url=https://edmontonjournal.com/news/politics/graham-thomson-wildrose-still-seems-to-be-flirting-with-denial-of-man-made-climate-change-in-2017|title=Graham Thomson: Wildrose still seems to be flirting with denial of man-made climate change in 2017|date=2017-01-03|newspaper=Edmonton Journal|language=en-US|access-date=2017-01-03 |last1=Thomson |first1=Graham}} This conflicts with the current scientific opinion on climate change, which asserts a 95% confidence that climate change is caused primarily by human activities.
The Alberta New Democratic Party — which held a majority government in the legislature — responded by requesting that the Wildrose Party – the official opposition – remove Don MacIntyre from his position as energy critic. Leduc-Beaumont NDP MLA Shaye Anderson said, "It’s irresponsible to lend climate change-denying conspiracies the credibility of the office of the Official Opposition. Unless (Wildrose Leader Brian) Jean agrees with what Mr. MacIntyre is saying, he must remove him from his position."{{Cite web|url=http://www.edmontonsun.com/2017/01/03/ndp-demands-removal-of-wildrose-critic-over-climate-change-row|title=NDP demands removal of Wildrose critic over climate change row|website=Edmonton Sun|access-date=2017-01-07 |date=January 3, 2017 |last1=Graney |first1=Emma}}
The Wildrose Party responded by issuing a statement that, "We get calls daily from Albertans living in NDP-held ridings furious that their MLAs are not listening to their opposition to the carbon tax. I suggest they spend their time listening to those concerns,"{{Cite news|url=http://globalnews.ca/news/3158315/wildrose-nixes-ndp-call-to-sack-electricity-critic-over-climate-change-denials/|title=Wildrose nixes NDP call to sack electricity critic over climate change denials|last=Bennett|first=Dean|newspaper=Global News|access-date=2017-01-07 |date=January 3, 2017 |agency=The Canadian Press}} – in reference to the $20 per tonne carbon tax put in place by the Alberta government.{{Cite web|url=https://www.alberta.ca/climate-carbon-pricing.aspx|title=Carbon levy and rebates|website=www.alberta.ca|access-date=2017-01-07}}
Criminal history
MacIntyre resigned his seat as legislative representative for Innisfail-Sylvan Lake in February 2018, near the time he was charged with sexual assault and sexual interference involving a girl under the age of 16. The actions occurred between five and ten times between 2010 and 2011 and, during the trial, MacIntyre claimed that his actions were done during a dark period of his life and part of Satan's plan.{{Cite news|url=https://edmontonjournal.com/news/local-news/don-macintyre-former-mla-accused-of-child-sex-assault-to-appear-in-red-deer-court|title='Satan's plan': Former MLA Don MacIntyre pleads guilty to one count of sexual interference |work=Edmonton Journal |first1=Jonny |last1=Wakefield |date=January 11, 2019|language=en|access-date=January 12, 2019}} He also told his victim during the actions that God had approved the abuse.{{cite news |last=Krugel |first=Lauren |date=January 11, 2019 |title=Former Alberta MLA Don MacIntyre gets 3 years for sex offence involving underage girl |url=https://globalnews.ca/news/4837077/don-macintyre-red-deer-court-sex-charges/ |work=Global News |agency=The Canadian Press |location= |access-date=March 18, 2024}}
