He has been a Professor at the Department of Physics of the Aristotelian University of Thessaloniki since 2012. In 2017 he was elected as the Director and President of the Board of Directors of the National Observatory of Athens (NOA), the first research institute established in the modern Greek state..{{Cite web |title=Historical Note |url=https://www.noa.gr/en/history/ |access-date=2025-01-20 |website=National Observatory of Athens |language=en-US}}. He is also an adjunct Professor at the European University of Cyprus, affiliated to the CERIDES center of excellence and for more than 13 years was a Visiting Professor at the Institute INAOE in Mexico. In recent years, he has been one of the leading members of the national campaign addressing the challenges of climate change in Greece. He speaks Greek, English, Italian and Spanish.{{Cite web |last=Plionis |first=Manolis |title=Σύντομο Βιογραφικό Σημείωμα: Μανώλης Πλειώνης |url=https://www.physics.auth.gr/uploads/person/translation/cv/405/b3d9a2df-1937-4134-afb8-f412a20623b9.pdf |website= |language=el}}
Biography
Manolis Plionis was born in Athens in 1960. He earned a degree in Mathematics from the University of Crete and completed a PhD in Observational Cosmology in 1989 from the University of Sussex, UK. His doctoral research focuses on the formation of galaxy clusters and their statistical distribution in large-scale structures of the universe.{{Cite web |title=Galaxy clustering and filaments |url=https://sussex.primo.exlibrisgroup.com/discovery/fulldisplay?docid=alma9931840302461&context=L&vid=44SUS_INST:44SUS_VU1&lang=en&search_scope=MyInst_and_CI_no_BLDS&adaptor=Local%20Search%20Engine&tab=MyInst_and_CI_no_BLDS&query=any,contains,Plionis&offset= |access-date=2025-01-20 |website=sussex.primo.exlibrisgroup.com |language=en}} After completing his PhD studies he worked as a postdoctoral researcher at the SISSA International Research Center in Italy for approximately 5 years, 2 of which as a E.C. Marie Curie Fellow under the Human Capital and Mobility program. He also spent 1 year as a postdoctoral researcher at the International Center of Theoretical Physics (ICTP). In 1995, he returned to Greece to join the National Observatory of Athens as a researcher, where he served until 2012, eventually attaining the rank of Research Director, the highest research position in Greece. In 2009, he was elected Full Professor at the Physics Department of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and in 2012 he officially assumed his role at the university.
In 2017 he was elected Director and President of the Board of Directors of the National Observatory of Athens. He immediately launched a campaign, supported by NOA’s Board of Directors and NOA’s research staff, that led to the funding and initiation of the “PANhellenic GEophysical observatory of Antikythera (PANGEA)”{{Cite web |title=PANGEA |url=https://www.noa.gr/en/ypodomes/pangea/ |access-date=2025-01-21 |website=National Observatory of Athens |language=en-US}}, located on the historic island of Antikythera{{Cite web |title=earth.esa.int |url=https://earth.esa.int/eogateway/news/aeolus-enhances-volcanic-ash-forecasts-for-aviation-safety/pangea-observatory-antikythera? |website=earth.esa.int}} widely known as the place of the discovery of the Antikythera mechanism, to the funding of the integrated Science Hub “NOA-AEGIS Centre for Security, Safety and Hazards Risk Resilience”. His proposal that the government fund a National Network for Climate Change was also accepted and, as a result, he has been coordinating the CLIMPACT project {{Cite web |title=CLIMPACT |url=https://climpact.gr/main/ |access-date=2025-01-21 |website=climpact.gr}}, a collaborating network that unites 27 major Greek academic and research institutions{{Cite web |title=CLIMPACT |url=https://climpact.gr/network/core |access-date=2025-01-21 |website=climpact.gr}} to address issues of climate change related science, on mitigation & adaptation actions and climate change related natural disasters.
