Search

The search started on 14 January 2020, when YouTuber SalC1 uploaded a video named "The Mystery of the Minecraft pack.png file".{{Cite web |last=Trahan |first=Philip |date=2020-09-05 |title=Minecraft Fans Find Sought-After Map Seed |url=https://gamerant.com/minecraft-pack-png-seed-found/#:~:text=SalC1%20put%20out%20the%20call%20for%20the%20community%20to%20find%20the%20pack.png%20seed%20in%20January%20of%20this%20year |access-date=2024-08-15 |website=Game Rant |language=en}}{{Cite web |date=2020-09-29 |title=The project 'pack.png' to reach 'that landscape' displayed by default in Minecraft finally arrives at the promised land |url=https://gigazine.net/gsc_news/en/20200929-minecraft-pack-png/#:~:text=The%20'pack.png'%20project%20was%20started%20by%20YouTuber%20SalC1%20.%20In%20the%20following%20movie%20released%20by%20SalC1%20on%20January%2014,%202020 |access-date=2024-08-15 |website=GIGAZINE |language=en}} In the video, he details how he attempted to find the seed of the infamous image by looking into results of Google Search and Minecraft forum websites.

After the video was published, SalC1 contacted developers of Mojang Studios on Twitter if they had any information on the image file. Markus Persson, the creator of Minecraft responded, being unable to answer the question. Dinnerbone also responded with a potential seed, but the seed was searched and was considered invalid.

A recreation began in order to reverse engineer the seed to the world.{{Cite news |last1=Reporter |first1=Imogen Beckhelling Former News |last2=Beckhelling |first2=Imogen |date=2020-09-07 |title=Minecraft fans have discovered the location of the "most iconic image in Minecraft history" |url=https://www.rockpapershotgun.com/minecraft-fans-have-discovered-the-location-of-the-most-iconic-image-in-minecraft-history |access-date=2024-08-16 |work=Rock Paper Shotgun |language=en}}

On September 5, 2020, the seed was found at around 5am in the morning, revealing it to be 3257840388504953787, ending a 8 month search. Interestingly, the seed was reportedly in the last 5% of seeds searched.

Reverse engineering the seed

Since the image was so low quality in the game files, AI upscaling by using thousands of Minecraft screenshots was used, resulting in a more crisp 512x512 image. From then, a recreation of the image was beginning construction in order to get the location of where the screenshot was taken. They managed to find the X coordinate by using the pattern in the clouds.{{Cite web |title=Pack.png seed reversal methodology |url=https://docs.google.com/document/d/1PpZqHWXPLjOsXf_T7uyH4rWuxUMxzBlxvv5gm19P_Z8/edit |access-date=2024-08-16 |website=Google Docs |language=en}} Water orientation was used to find the direction of where the image was taken.

A program called "BOINC" was then used to file down the potential seeds to 700,000. The candidate seeds were then filtered through another program to check if they matched the height of the terrain of the recreation, resulting in the seed being found.

Legacy

After the project's end, many more projects branched off in light of inspiration of finding the image.
