Similar to a city's economy mainly consisting of its tourism industry, a large part of that economy comes to occupy a large extent of a city.

However, whether which amount's ratio is demarcated is not fixed. For example, the estimate that "Kyoto is approximately ten percent tourist trade" is standard{{Cite web |date=2020 |title=Plan |url=https://www.city.kyoto.lg.jp/templates/shingikai_kekka/cmsfiles/contents/0000173/173939/keikaku.pdf |access-date=April 1, 2025 |website=Kyoto City Official Website}} (Ten percent is but a tourist city. City authorities bureau also declared it a "tourist city").

A tourist city is not so compared to a regular city, businesses of sightseeing relevance, for example, the large population of people involved in accommodation (such as hotels and ryokans), the sales of souvenir shop goods, the food service industry (that is, restaurants), the transportation industry (the working and operation of taxis, buses, tour boats and the like). Moreover, people are engaged in connection outskirts businesses, for example linen dry cleaning accommodation companies, lodging companies and restaurant industries are also put into wholesaler's foodstuff production. Additionally, there is also a large amount of people engaged in tourist information (tour guide companies).

As a result, tourist cities also establish regions to protect tourist attraction scenery.
