The Dragon Awards are a set of literary and media awards voted on by fandom and presented annually since 2016 by Dragon Con for excellence in various categories of science fiction, fantasy, and horror in various media — novels, movies, television, and games.
History
The Dragon Awards were first presented in 2016,{{cite web|url=https://www.theverge.com/2016/9/4/12794666/dragon-award-dragoncon-david-weber-terry-pratchett |title= The inaugural Dragon Awards highlight the populist side of science fiction and fantasy|first=Andrew |last=Liptak |date=September 4, 2016 |website=The Verge|access-date=March 12, 2019 |archive-date=January 11, 2019 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20190111025840/https://www.theverge.com/2016/9/4/12794666/dragon-award-dragoncon-david-weber-terry-pratchett |url-status=live}}{{cite news |last1=Beth Elderkin |title=DragonCon Releases (Mostly) Puppy-Free Nominations For First Dragon Awards |url=https://io9.gizmodo.com/dragoncon-releases-mostly-puppy-free-nominations-for-1785245629 |access-date=12 March 2019 |work=Gizmodo |date=13 August 2016 |quote=DragonCon, Atlanta’s annual science fiction and fantasy competition, released the nominee list (see below) for the first-ever Dragon Awards}} created on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of Dragon Con to "recognize excellence in all things Science Fiction and Fantasy."{{cite web|url=http://application.dragoncon.org/dc_fan_awards_nominations.php|title=Dragon Con 2019 - Dragon Awards Nominations|access-date=March 12, 2019 |website=The Dragon Awards |archive-date=March 30, 2019 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20190330075435/http://application.dragoncon.org/dc_fan_awards_nominations.php |url-status=live}}{{cite news |title=Dragon Con Announces Creation of the Dragon Awards |url=http://www.sfwa.org/2016/04/36008/ |access-date=12 March 2019 |work=Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America |date=25 April 2016 |quote=In celebration of their 30th anniversary, they have announced the creation of the Dragon Awards. |archive-date=10 December 2018 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20181210181012/https://www.sfwa.org/2016/04/36008/ |url-status=dead }} By 2018, 11,000 voters cast a ballot,{{cite news |title=Dragon Con packs in guests from all over the world, celebs in 2018 |url=https://www.wsbtv.com/entertainment/things-2-do/dragon-con-packs-in-guests-from-all-over-the-world-celebs-in-2018/826974373 |access-date=12 March 2019 |work=WSB-TV |date=5 September 2018 |quote=he Dragon Awards are the only fan’s choice award in fandom, with more than 11,000 people casting a ballot this year.}} given out annually at Dragon Con in Atlanta, Georgia.
A unique feature of the Awards is that it runs a diverse set of subgenera on the ballot.{{cite news |last1=Andrew Liptak |date=4 August 2017 |title=The 2017 Dragon Awards are a far-ranging sci-fi and fantasy reading list |url=https://www.theverge.com/2017/8/4/16094656/dragon-award-dragoncon-sci-fi-fantasy-books-sad-puppies |access-date=12 March 2019 |work=The Verge |quote=A key feature of the Dragon Awards is that, instead of one broad novel category (for any book over 50,000 words), they break down nominees by subgenre, for a much wider-ranging and more specific field of recognition.}}
The finalist short list for the first Dragon Awards was announced on August 11, 2016,{{cite news |title=2016 Dragon Awards Shortlist |url=https://locusmag.com/2016/08/2016-dragon-awards-shortlist/ |access-date=12 March 2019 |work=Locus |date=12 August 2016}} and the winners were announced on September 4 that year.{{cite news |title=2016 Dragon Awards Winners |url=https://locusmag.com/2016/09/2016-dragon-awards-winners/ |access-date=March 12, 2019 |work=Locus |date=6 September 2016 |quote=Winners of the inaugural Dragon Awards were announced at Dragon Con, held September 2–5, 2016 in Atlanta GA.}}
In 2017, nominated authors Allison Littlewood, John Scalzi, and N. K. Jemisin asked Dragon Con to remove their names from the ballot; Scalzi subsequently reconsidered and remained in the contest. However, the coordinators of the Dragon Awards initially refused to remove the other authors' names from the running, which generated criticism across blogs and science fiction related publications, ultimately leading the organizers to comply with nominee wishes when they desire to abstain.{{cite web|url=http://www.jimchines.com/2017/08/dragon-awards/|title=Dragon Awards Refuse to Let Authors Withdraw|first=Jim C. |last=Hines| access-date=March 12, 2019 |date=August 9, 2017 |website= Jim C. Nomination and voting processes
The nominations and votes are collected electronically. Participation is available to everyone, requiring only an e-mail address, but no membership or other fees, to vote. The Dragon Awards website states that they "[reserve] the right to invalidate suspect or questionable ballots without notice,"{{cite web|url=http://awards.dragoncon.org/faq/fan-faq/|title=Fan FAQ|access-date=March 12, 2019|publisher=Dragon Con|archive-date=March 28, 2019|url-status=live|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20190328141227/http://awards.dragoncon.org/faq/fan-faq/}} and that "All decisions regarding the voting process and selection of winners shall be made by DRAGON CON in its sole discretion, shall be final, and shall not be subject to challenge or appeal."{{cite web |url=http://application.dragoncon.org/dragon_awards_terms_conditions.php |title=Dragon Awards Official Rules |access-date=March 25, 2019}} Language describing the review of nominations does not state that nominations are counted numerically but are "gathered and reviewed to create a final ballot."{{cite web |title=The Process |url=http://awards.dragoncon.org/the-process/ |website=The Dragon Awards |publisher=Dragon Con |access-date=13 March 2019 |archive-date=March 26, 2019 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20190326021440/http://awards.dragoncon.org/the-process/ |url-status=live |quote=Your nominations are gathered and reviewed to create a final ballot.}} Neither counts of nominations nor votes have ever been made public.
The award process consists of two steps:
Reception
The Dragon Awards have been criticized because of the appearance that the awards were created in conjunction with campaigns by the Rabid and Sad Puppies to attack the Hugo Award.{{cite web|first=Andrew |last=Liptak |url=https://www.theverge.com/2016/8/13/12461038/dragon-awards-shortlist-dragoncon-science-fiction-fantasy |title=The first ever Dragon Awards shortlist aims to be the next major award for science fiction fans |website=The Verge |date=August 13, 2016 |access-date=March 25, 2019 |quote=this award would be driven by fan participation: they would nominate their favorite works, and vote on the final shortlist. Unlike the Hugo Awards, which require a paid membership to vote, the Dragon Awards were a completely free process.}} Another concern raised is regarding the opaqueness of the nomination and voting process.
