Biography
Pahewa began weaving as a child when she was taught by her Nanny Bub, the younger sister of Rangitīaria Dennan.{{CiteQ|Q104709826}} Pahewa's mother, Emily Schuster, was a renowned weaver, as was Pahewa's twin sister Dawn Smith, and both women influenced Pahewa. Pahewa was also taught by Diggeress Te Kanawa.
Pahewa has taught weaving at Te Papa o Te Aroha and Te Wananga o Aotearoa, both in Tokoroa. Pahewa was the head of the New Zealand Māori Arts and Crafts Institute's weaving school, Te Rito, located in Rotorua that her mother Emily Schuster set-up in 1967. Both her mother and her sister Dawn have also held the head role of Te Tumu Raranga at the institute. After 18 years in the role Pahewa was succeeded by Meleta Bennett.{{Cite web |date=8 December 2013 |title=Edna Pahewa – Te Rito weaving school |url=https://www.rnz.co.nz/national/programmes/teahikaa/audio/2578998/edna-pahewa-te-rito-weaving-school |url-status=live |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20231004155126/https://www.rnz.co.nz/national/programmes/teahikaa/audio/2578998/edna-pahewa-te-rito-weaving-school |archive-date=4 October 2023 |access-date=9 March 2020 |website=RNZ |language=en-nz}}{{Cite book |last=Bidois |first=Vanessa |url= |title=Māori Weaving: The Art of Creating Māori Textiles |last2=Taylor |first2=Cherie |last3=Bargh |first3=Robyn |publisher=New Zealand Māori Arts and Crafts Institute |year=2015 |isbn=978-1-77550-192-3 |location=Wellington, Aotearoa, New Zealand |language=en |oclc=922466620}}{{Cite web |title=The National Weaving School |url=https://www.tepuia.com/nz-maori-arts-crafts/the-national-weaving-school/ |url-status=live |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20230510190514/https://www.tepuia.com/nz-maori-arts-crafts/the-national-weaving-school/ |archive-date=10 May 2023 |access-date=28 November 2022 |website=New Zealand Māori Arts and Crafts Institute |language=en}}
