Sir Edwin Mitchelson {{post-nominals|country=NZL|KCMG|size=85%}} (7 April 1846 – 11 April 1934) was a New Zealand politician and timber merchant.

Mitchelson was born in Auckland in a cottage on Queen Street in the mid 1840s.{{Cite web| title = Remuera Heritage Walk |url=https://www.aucklandcouncil.govt.nz/arts-culture-heritage/heritage-walks-places/Documents/remuera-heritage-walk.pdf |author=Remuera Heritage & Hobson Community Board | publisher = Auckland Council| access-date = 31 August 2021}} He developed business interests in timber and kauri gum, shipbuilding, and horse racing and breeding. He was a cabinet minister from 1883 to 1884 and 1887 to 1880 as Minister of Public Works.{{sfn|Scholefield|1950|pp=38–40}} From 1887 to 1891 he was Minister of Māori Affairs (called Native Affairs), and from 1889 to 1891 he was Minister of Telegraphs and Postmaster-General.{{sfn|Scholefield|1950|p=40}}
He represented the Marsden electorate from {{NZ election link year|1881}} to 1887, then Eden from {{NZ election link year|1887}} to 1896, when he was defeated (for the City of Auckland electorate).{{sfn|Scholefield|1950|p=127}}
Later years
Mitchelson was the Mayor of Auckland City from 1903 to 1905,{{DNZB|Mogford|Janice C.|2m52|Mitchelson, Edwin – Biography|25 January 2012}} chairman of the Remuera Road Board, and a member of the Legislative Council from 1920 until his death on 11 April 1934.{{sfn|Scholefield|1950|p=81}} He was appointed a Knight Commander of the Order of St Michael and St George in the 1921 King's Birthday Honours.{{London Gazette |issue=32346 |date=4 June 1921 |page=4533 |supp=2}} He was buried at Purewa Cemetery in the Auckland suburb of Meadowbank.{{cite web |title=Notable graves |url= https://www.purewa.co.nz/notable-graves/ |publisher=Purewa Trust Board |access-date=15 February 2021}}
Personal life
