Emanuel Fernando Sheffer Rego (born 15 April 1973) is a Brazilian male former beach volleyball player who competed in five consecutive Summer Olympics, starting in 1996.{{cite Sports-Reference|df=dmy-all}} Rego partnered with José Loiola at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney,{{Cite news |url=https://www.nytimes.com/2000/09/19/olympics/americans-lucky-in-losses.html |work=The New York Times |date=19 September 2000 |title=Americans Lucky in Losses |access-date=29 September 2024 }} {{subscription required}} though they did not medal. He won the gold medal in the men's beach team competition at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, partnering with Ricardo Santos. He won the bronze medal at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing and the silver medal at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London.
In 2016, Rego was inducted into the International Volleyball Hall of Fame.{{Cite web |url=https://www.volleyhall.org/emanuel-rego.html |title=Emanuel Rego |website=International Volleyball Hall of Fame |access-date=29 September 2024 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20240223034845/https://www.volleyhall.org/emanuel-rego.html |archive-date=23 February 2024 |url-status=live }} He was the Brazilian flagbearer at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.{{Cite web |url=https://www.olympedia.org/athletes/51906 |title=Emanuel |website=Olympedia |access-date=29 September 2024 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20230416193509/https://www.olympedia.org/athletes/51906 |archive-date=16 April 2023 |url-status=live }}
Rego famously offered his medal to his compatriot Vanderlei de Lima – who won the bronze in the men's marathon after being attacked by Neil Horan – a year later, though it was politely declined.{{Cite magazine |url=https://www.si.com/olympics/2016/08/05/rio-olympics-opening-ceremony-vanderlei-de-lima |magazine=Sports Illustrated |title=Who is Vanderlei Cordeiro de Lima? |date=5 August 2016 |access-date=29 September 2024 }}
Personal life
Rego was born in Curitiba, and is married (2013) to volleyball Olympic medallist and Senator Leila Barros.
