On the cover art, the album title appears as Empty Bottles, Broken Hearts, while the reverse side reads Broken Bottles, Empty Hearts, suggesting a more dark and violent alternate title.{{cite web |title=Murder City Devils |url=https://trouserpress.com/reviews/murder-city-devils/ |website=Trouser Press |accessdate=26 July 2020}}
Critical reception
CMJ New Music Monthly praised the album, writing that "grunge is back, low, mean and hedonistic as ever."{{Cite web|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=uikEAAAAMBAJ&q=Empty+Bottles%2C+Broken+Hearts+murder+city+devils+1998&pg=PA50|title=CMJ New Music Monthly|first=CMJ Network|last=Inc|date=November 26, 1998|publisher=CMJ Network, Inc.|via=Google Books}} The A.V. Club wrote that "the group dredges up the sound of the proto-punks of the late '60s and early '70s, making music that screams to be heard but doesn't care if you don't listen."{{Cite web|url=https://www.avclub.com/the-murder-city-devils-empty-bottles-broken-hearts-1798194090|title=The Murder City Devils: Empty Bottles, Broken Hearts|website=Music}}
