Ergane is a genus of jumping spiders that was first described by Ludwig Carl Christian Koch in 1881.{{cite book| last=Koch| first=L.| year=1881| title=Die Arachniden Australiens| publisher=Nürnberg 1| pages=1213–1271| author-link=Ludwig Carl Christian Koch}} Males of E. benjarei is {{convert|9|mm}} long. The form of the pedipalp and the abdominal pattern suggest that Ergane is close to Chalcotropis.{{cite journal| last1=Murphy| first1=Frances| last2=Murphy| first2=John| year=2000| title=An Introduction to the Spiders of South East Asia| journal=Malaysian Nature Society| publisher=Kuala Lumpur| page=284}} It is named after the goddess Athena, called Athena Ergane as the patron of craftsmen and artisans.
