The game received favorable reviews according to the review aggregation website GameRankings. Next Generation called it "the type of golf game that's sure to liven up any PlayStation party and be enjoyed by gamers and golf fans alike." In Japan, Famitsu gave it a score of 30 out of 40. GamePro said, "Lacking name recognition or even normal-sized players, Hot Shots Golf may at first seem destined for the bin marked 'mediocre.' But this fun, challenging golf game has an engine that the pros would be proud of and all the makings of a legendary link-splitter."{{cite magazine |url=https://retrocdn.net/images/e/e5/GamePro_US_117.pdf |title=Hot Shots Golf Review for PlayStation on GamePro.com |magazine=GamePro |publisher=IDG |author=Scary Larry |issue=117 |date=June 1998 |page=126 |accessdate=24 November 2021 |archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20050116184851/http://gamepro.com/sony/psx/games/reviews/218.shtml |archivedate=16 January 2005 |url-status=live}}{{efn|GamePro gave the game three 4.5/5 scores for graphics, control, and fun factor, and 4/5 for sound.}}
