Background

In the late 1990s, Vertical Horizon's indie albums began to attract record executives from several record labels.{{cite web|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=FikEAAAAMBAJ&q=Matt+Scannell+born&pg=PA98|title=Billboard|first=Nielsen Business Media|last=Inc|date=May 12, 2001|publisher=Nielsen Business Media, Inc.|via=Google Books}} The band signed with RCA Records in 1998.

Release and commercial success

The song became a massive hit, reaching number one at the Billboard Hot 100 chart and the Adult Top 40 chart and becoming Billboard's Most Played Single of 2000.
