Family is the debut studio album by folk rock family ensemble Thompson. It was released by Fantasy Records, part of Concord Music, on 17 November 2014.
Background
Family was conceived by Teddy Thompson when, after he lost his recording contract with Verve Records and came to the end of a serious relationship, he approached his musical family members to contribute to an all-Thompson album.{{cite web |url=https://www.nytimes.com/2014/11/09/magazine/teddy-thompsons-folk-rock-family-reunion.html?_r=0 | title=Teddy Thompson's Folk-Rock Family Reunion |work=The New York Times | date=7 November 2014 | accessdate=24 May 2015 | last=Dominus |first=Susan}} Teddy Thompson states: "I had some kind of mid-life crisis early and was having a real hard time with personal stuff...so I decided to make this record", stating further that "family is really important, and I've missed them".{{cite journal | last=Irwin | first=Colin | title=Filter Albums | journal=Mojo | issue= December 2014 | pages=60–63 | author-link=Colin Irwin (journalist)}} He told Uncut: "I came up with this project to get everyone back together. I was really trying to heal some wounds for myself, but I dragged everyone along with me", stating elsewhere that one of the rules for the album were that "every instrument must be played by a family member".{{cite web | url=http://www.relix.com/media/video/thompson_careful | title=Thompson "Careful" | work=Relix | date=6 April 2015 | accessdate=28 May 2015}}
According to New Yorker magazine, the Thompson family "rival the Wainwright-McGarrigle-Roche clan when it comes to multigenerational musical talent".{{cite web |url=http://www.newyorker.com/goings-on-about-town/night-life/thompson-family | title=Night Life : The Thompson Family | work=The New Yorker |accessdate=24 May 2015}} The musicians involved on this album span three generations and include Teddy Thompson's long separated parents Richard and Linda Thompson, his sister Kami Thompson and her husband James Walbourne (also her bandmate in The Rails) as well as nephew Zak Hobbs and half-brother Jack Thompson (son of Richard Thompson from his second marriage).{{cite web |url=https://www.theguardian.com/music/2014/dec/19/thompson-family-review-kings-place-richard-and-linda-thompson | title=Thompson Family review -generations show their talent, while Linda looks on | work=The Guardian| date=19 December 2014 | accessdate=24 May 2015 | last=Denselow |first=Robin | author-link=Robin Denselow}} The band is completed with assistance from Walbourne's brother Rob on drums and Teddy Thompson's eldest sister (and Zak Hobbs' mother) Muna Mascolo, who is not a musician, on backing vocals.{{cite web |url=http://www.folkradio.co.uk/2014/12/thompson-family/ | title=Thompson -Family | publisher=Folk Radio UK | date=1 December 2014 | accessdate=24 May 2015 | last=Holland | first=Simon}}
Writing and recording
The various musicians contributed a song or two each as well as playing on each other's material.{{cite web |url=http://www.nydailynews.com/entertainment/music/teddy-thompson-gathers-clan-odd-project-article-1.2095242 | title=Teddy Thompson, son of folk-rockers Richard and Linda Thompson, gathers the family for a smart and strange project | work=Daily News (New York) | date=28 January 2015 |accessdate=24 May 2015 | last=Farber | first = Jim}} According to Richard Thompson, the contributions took "two to three years" to compile, with everyone writing their own material and sending files to each other.{{cite web | url=http://drownedinsound.com/in_depth/4148091-i-still-think-i-m-twenty-years-old---dis-meets-richard-thompson | title=I Still Think I'm Twenty Years Old – DiS Meets Richard Thompson | work=Drowned in Sound | date=14 August 2014 | accessdate=24 May 2014 | last=Gourlay | first=Dom | archive-date=15 August 2014 | archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20140815070800/http://drownedinsound.com/in_depth/4148091-i-still-think-i-m-twenty-years-old---dis-meets-richard-thompson | url-status=dead }} The album was then worked on throughout 2013 by Teddy Thompson and completed with studio sessions in London and New York afterwards with all the participating family members in attendance.{{cite web|url=http://www.acousticguitar.com/News/Thompson-Clan-Comes-Together-for-Family |title=Thompson Clan Comes Together for 'Family' |work=Acoustic Guitar |date=18 September 2014 |accessdate=24 May 2015 |last=Walsh |first=Jason |url-status=dead |archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20150528070654/http://www.acousticguitar.com/News/Thompson-Clan-Comes-Together-for-Family |archivedate=28 May 2015 }}
Various members of the family have commented on the rivalry the album has raised among themselves. Kami Thompson commented on the project: "The whole album is like a family songwriting competition – it's a bloody nightmare. I mean, what could possibly go wrong"?{{cite web | url=https://www.nytimes.com/2014/11/09/magazine/teddy-thompsons-folk-rock-family-reunion.html | title=Teddy Thompson's Folk-Rock Family Reunion | work=The New York Times | date=7 November 2014 | accessdate=25 May 2015 | last=Dominus | first=Susan}} Similarly, Teddy Thompson stated that "the album became something of a family songwriting contest", but conceded elsewhere that "it's not as if we're having family therapy and making everyone pay 12 bucks to hear it".{{cite web |url=https://blogs.wsj.com/speakeasy/2014/10/14/kami-thompson-leads-family-band-on-careful-exclusive-premiere/ | title=Kami Thompson Leads ‘Family’ Band on ‘Careful’ (Exclusive Premiere) | work=The Wall Street Journal | date=14 October 2014 | accessdate=25 May 2015 | last=Danton | first=Eric R}} NPR Music comment in an article that "what you get here is a family album in the truest sense of the world, with everyone involved clamoring to be heard while competing for attention with people they love".{{cite web |url=https://www.npr.org/2014/11/09/361384683/first-listen-thompson-family | title=First Listen: Thompson, 'Family' | publisher=NPR Music | date=9 November 2014 | accessdate=25 May 2015 | last=Thompson | first=Stephen}} Richard Thompson gives a metaphorical explanation for Family, stating that the album is "like an enormous cardigan with eight holes for heads (that) you knit everyone into", telling Mojo that "it's fun to do".{{cite web |url=https://www.npr.org/2014/11/23/365763525/thompson-familys-musical-sweater-smells-funny-lot-of-personality | title=Thompson Family's Musical Sweater: 'Smells Funny, Lot Of Personality' | work=NPR Music | date=23 November 2014 | accessdate=25 May 2015 | last=Videland | first=Tess}}
Family was released on CD, vinyl, and as a digital download. A deluxe CD was also released which included a DVD containing the short documentary Thompson: The Making of Family.{{cite web |url=http://www.guitarworld.com/stream-right-track-new-thompson-family-album-exclusive| title=Stream "Right," a Track from the New Thompson 'Family' Album — Exclusive| work=Guitar World | date=4 November 2014 | accessdate=25 May 2015 | last=Fanelli | first=Damian}}
