The AllMusic review by Scott Yanow states that the album "...has plenty of memorable moments and is a surprising but logical success; Tyner's orchestral piano blended with the strings very well."{{AllMusic|last=Yanow|first=Scott|class=album|id=r149212}} Chris Sheridan of Jazz Journal thought the album "possesses a winning boldness and vitality". He commended Tyner, whose music he described as "thickly-textured, and both melodically and rhythmically complex", but criticized the "ostinato motif" of "You Stepped out of a Dream", describing it as "a little mundane".{{cite magazine|last=Sheridan|first=Chris|date=July 1976|number=7|volume=29|title=Record Reviews: McCoy Tyner – Fly with the Wind|magazine=Jazz Journal|page=38|location=London|issn=0307-4439|publisher=Novello & Co}}
