Born in Port Burwell, Ontario,{{cite news |url=https://www.thestar.com/news/gta/article/1260411--obituary-fred-bodsworth-author-of-last-of-the-curlews-93 |title=Obituary: Fred Bodsworth, author of Last of the Curlews, 93 |newspaper=Toronto Star |date=September 21, 2012 |accessdate=2012-09-22}} Bodsworth worked as a journalist for the St. Thomas Times-Journal, The Toronto Star, and Maclean's, where he also served as assistant editor. Bodsworth was predeceased by his wife Margaret Banner.
The Port Burwell branch of the Elgin County Library was renamed in his honour in 2005.
