Composition
Friend shows Deerhoof shift into traditional pop rock, yielding a "pretty intricate [and] proggy" take on the genre.{{Cite web|url= https://www.popmatters.com/deerhoof-friend-opportunity-2495783754.html|author=Michael Keefe|date=January 14, 2007|title=Deerhoof: Friend Opportunity|work=PopMatters|access-date=November 20, 2021}}{{Cite web|url= https://www.tinymixtapes.com/music-review/deerhoof-friend-opportunity|author=WILLCOMA|title=Deerhoof - Friend Opportunity|work=Tiny Mix Tapes|access-date=November 20, 2021}} Along with experimental pop, it is also seen as a return to the "listener-friendly" avant-garde music that appeared on Apple O' and Milk Man.{{Cite web|url= https://www.thelineofbestfit.com/reviews/albums/deerhoof-friend-opportunity-908|author=Rich Hughes|date=March 6, 2007|title=Deerhoof - Friend Opportunity|work=The Line of Best Fit|access-date=November 20, 2021}}
