At the 2017 World Aquatics Championships in Budapest, in the Men's 4 × 100 metre freestyle relay,
the Brazilian team composed of Santos, César Cielo, Bruno Fratus and Marcelo Chierighini achieved a historic result by winning the silver medal, the best Brazilian result of all time at the World Championships in this race. Brazil beat the South American record of 2009, still in the super-suits era, with a time of 3:10.34, just 0.28 from the US team. The last medal of Brazil in this race, in Worlds, was obtained in 1994.{{cite web |title=Results of the 4x100-metre freestyle at 2017 Budapest |work=OmegaTiming |date=23 July 2017 |url=http://www.omegatiming.com/File/Download?id=000111010A0101F704FFFFFFFFFFFF01 |accessdate=23 July 2017}}{{cite web |title=The 33rd World Medal of the Brazilian Swimming |work=CBDA |date=23 July 2017 |url=http://www.cbda.org.br/cbda/natacao/noticias/18126/a-33-ordf-medalha-mundial-da-natacao-brasileira |accessdate=23 July 2017 |language=pt |archive-date=26 July 2017 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20170726081533/http://www.cbda.org.br/cbda/natacao/noticias/18126/a-33-ordf-medalha-mundial-da-natacao-brasileira |url-status=dead }}{{cite web |title=In the stroke!
