Architecture career
Pesce, born on 8 November 1939 in La Spezia, Italy, studied architecture at the University of Venice, with such notable teachers as Carlo Scarpa and Ernesto Rogers. Between 1958 and 1963, Pesce participated in Gruppo N, an early collective concerned with programmed art patterned after the Bauhaus. Since the 1960s, Gaetano Pesce has been known to relate art to the design of interiors, products, and architecture.{{cite news|last1=Perry|first1=Amy|title=The Legendary Gaetano Pesce on Work and Life|url=http://tmagazine.blogs.nytimes.com/|newspaper=The New York Times|date=8 May 2013|access-date=24 December 2015|archive-date=11 December 2015|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20151211055434/http://tmagazine.blogs.nytimes.com/|url-status=live}}{{Cite book|title=Gaetano Pesce: some works from 1969–1990.|last1=Pesce|first1=Gaetano|last2=Kuramata|first2=Shirō|date=1991|publisher=Gallery·Ma|location=Tokyo|oclc = 48816683}} The New York Times critic Herbert Muschamp described Pesce as "the architectural equivalent of a brainstorm." {{cite news|last1=Muschamp|first1=Herbert|title=It's A Mad Mad Mad Ad World|url=https://www.nytimes.com/1994/10/16/magazine/it-s-a-mad-mad-mad-ad-world.html|newspaper=The New York Times|date=16 October 1994|access-date=28 August 2017|archive-date=6 April 2024|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20240406013702/https://www.nytimes.com/1994/10/16/magazine/it-s-a-mad-mad-mad-ad-world.html|url-status=live}} Pesce's well known work includes Organic Building in Osaka, Japan, a Landmark vertical garden building designed to concealing a complex, computer-controlled hydration system to sustain plant growth, and the interior architecture of the Chiat/Day offices, an early workplace village modeled after urban life.{{cite book|last1=Turner|first1=Gavin|last2=Myerson|first2=Jeremy|title=New Workspace, New Culture: Office Design as a Catalyst for Change|date=1998|publisher=Gower Publishing Company|isbn=978-0566080289|pages=144 pages|url=http://www.gowerpublishing.com/|access-date=15 January 2016|archive-date=15 July 2012|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20120715060104/http://www.gowerpublishing.com/|url-status=live}} Among Pesce's architecture achievements are Les Halles ACIH (1979) and Parc de la Villette (1985), Paris, France, a complex of forms shaped like a running child.{{cite book|last1=Vanlaethem|first1=France|title=Gaetano Pesce : architecture, design, art|date=1989|publisher=Rizzoli|location=New York|isbn=978-0847810864|pages=126 pages : illustrations (some color); 30 cm}}

From the 1960s on, Pesce researched the function and form of utilitarian and decorative objects, including furniture, jewellery, and shoes, from the perspective of human emotion, environment, and production. For Pesce, the design and development of portable goods always incorporated craft-specialization, history, humour, and the human need for connection. Pesce's industrial design techniques such as diversified series production is a process by which he experimented with materials using a craft manufacturing sensibility applied to mass production methodology. On the production line, for example, factory workers vary proportions to produce a series of objects with an "imperfect and warm" quality.{{cite news |last1=Viladas |first1=Pilar |title=What's the Big Idea? |url=https://www.nytimes.com/2002/06/23/magazine/what-s-the-big-idea.html |newspaper=The New York Times |date=23 June 2002 |access-date=28 August 2017 |archive-date=7 May 2016 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20160507161044/http://www.nytimes.com/2002/06/23/magazine/what-s-the-big-idea.html |url-status=live}}{{cite news |last1=Giovannini |first1=Joseph |publisher=NY Times Art & Design |title=Gaetano Pesce: 'One-of-a-Kind Iconic Works, 1967–2015 |url=https://www.nytimes.com/2015/03/27/arts/design/gaetano-pesce-one-of-a-kind-iconic-works-1967-2015.html#:~:text=At%20Gaetano%20Pesce's%20solo,enshrined%20in%20the%20museum's%20vitrines. |date=26 March 2015 |access-date=28 August 2017 |archive-date=10 September 2020 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20200910173120/https://www.nytimes.com/2015/03/27/arts/design/gaetano-pesce-one-of-a-kind-iconic-works-1967-2015.html |url-status=live}}

The monumental female figure wrapped in a long cloak by Pesce was inspired by the Christian Maestà iconography of the Madonna on the Throne – the highly venerated Madonna Rucellai by Duccio di Boninsegna (1285), in Santa Maria Novella and later moved in the twentieth century to the Uffizi.{{Cite web|url = http://www.theflorentine.net/art-culture/2016/11/majesty-betrayed-gaetano-pesce/|title = Majesty Betrayed by Gaetano Pesce|date = 21 November 2016|access-date = 17 May 2018|archive-date = 18 May 2018|archive-url = https://web.archive.org/web/20180518054954/http://www.theflorentine.net/art-culture/2016/11/majesty-betrayed-gaetano-pesce/|url-status = live}} Pesce's sculpture entitled "Porta Ritratti" (2018) for the Milan Fuorisalone was exhibited at the entrance of the Brera Academy of Fine Arts, and later, the 13th edition of Design Miami / Basel. The ambitious installation – a chair measuring over 13 feet (4 meters) high representing 20 human faces – according to Pesce, " is a Trojan horse that penetrates the Rocca dell'Arte making victims among the old mentality." The work is another compelling tribute to cultural diversity within society.{{Cite web|url=http://design.pambianconews.com/gaetano-pesce-ad-art-basel-con-la-sedia-porta-ritratti/|title=Gaetano Pesce ad Art Basel con la 'Sedia Porta Ritratti' {{!}} Pambianco Design|website=design.pambianconews.com|date=14 May 2018|language=it-IT|access-date=29 May 2018|archive-date=18 May 2018|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20180518055659/http://design.pambianconews.com/gaetano-pesce-ad-art-basel-con-la-sedia-porta-ritratti/|url-status=live}}
