Gary Phil Brandner (May 31, 1930 – September 22, 2013) was an American horror fiction author best known for his werewolf themed trilogy of novels, The Howling.{{cite news|url=https://movies.nytimes.com/movie/23760/Howling-VI-The-Freaks/overview|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20071205223241/http://movies.nytimes.com/movie/23760/Howling-VI-The-Freaks/overview|url-status=dead|archive-date=5 December 2007|title=Howling VI - The Freaks (1991)|last=Binion|first=Cavett|department=Movies & TV Dept.|work=The New York Times|date=2007|accessdate=16 February 2011}}{{cite news|url=http://www.locusmag.com/News/2013/09/gary-brandner-1933-2013/ |title=Gary Brandner (1933-2013) |date=26 September 2013 |website=Locus Online |accessdate=2014-05-27}} The first book of the series was adapted loosely as a motion picture in 1981. Brandner's second and third Howling novels, published in 1979 and 1985 respectively, have no association with the film series, though he was involved with writing the screenplay for the second Howling film, Howling II: Your Sister Is a Werewolf.{{cn|date=July 2019}} The fourth film of the Howling series, Howling IV: The Original Nightmare, is actually the closest adaptation of Brandner's original novel, though this too varies to some degree.{{cn|date=July 2019}}
Brandner's novel Walkers was adapted and filmed for television as From The Dead Of Night.{{cite news|last1=McArdle|first1=Terence|title=Horror novelist Gary Brandner dies at 83|url=https://www.washingtonpost.com/entertainment/books/horror-novelist-gary-brandner-dies-at-83/2013/10/03/88051956-2ab2-11e3-97a3-ff2758228523_story.html|newspaper=The Washington Post|date=3 October 2013|language=en-US}} He also wrote the screenplay for the 1988 horror film Cameron's Closet.
