As a comedy TV series, it was initially rejected until posted online, where it became a hit.{{cite news |last=Snicks |first=Nick |title=Ready or not, 'Gay Robot' is coming to TV |url=http://www.afterelton.com/blog/snicks/ready-or-not-gay-robot-is-coming-to-tv |access-date=November 26, 2012 |newspaper=AfterElton |date=March 13, 2008 |url-status=dead |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20090426033713/http://www.afterelton.com/blog/snicks/ready-or-not-gay-robot-is-coming-to-tv |archive-date=April 26, 2009 }}{{cite news|last=Grossman|first=Lev|title=It's Wrong to Laugh at Gay Robot|url=https://techland.time.com/2007/05/25/nerd_video_its_wrong_to_laugh/|access-date=November 27, 2012|newspaper=Time|date=May 25, 2007}}{{cite news|last=Holbrook|first=Damian|title=What Do Buffy, Hellboy and a Gay Robot Have in Common?|url=http://www.tvguide.com/news/Buffy-Hellboy-Gay-40478.aspx|access-date=November 27, 2012|newspaper=TV Guide|date=March 29, 2007}} In 2005 Comedy Central ordered a pilot of Gay Robot as a live-action series from Sony Pictures TV and Adam Sandler and Jack Giarraputo's Happy Madison. TV Guide called the show a guilty pleasure and Gay Robot "the feyest droid since C-3PO". Inside the robot itself is actor Doug Jones. In an interview, he confirmed the insides of Gay Robot are based on Jon Lovitz's butler robot guy in The Benchwarmers, named Number 7.
