Ecosystem and biodiversity

The mountain is part of the Ulu Masen Protected Forest, one of the important forest areas in Sumatra. This forest is a habitat for various types of endemic flora and fauna, including several endangered species, such as the Sumatran Tiger (Panthera tigris sumatrae) and the Sumatran Elephant (Elephas maximus sumatranus).{{Cite web |last=R |first=Rahmadi |date=2022-10-22 |title=Masa Depan Gajah Sumatera di Hutan Ulu Masen |url=https://www.mongabay.co.id/2022/10/22/masa-depan-gajah-sumatera-di-hutan-ulu-masen/ |access-date=2024-12-03 |website=Mongabay.co.id |language=en-US}} Its ecological function is as a carbon sink and regulator of the hydrological cycle.{{Cite web |last=Andhika |first=Raka |date=2024-11-05 |title=Ini Lho 10 Daftar Pilihan Gunung Daerah Aceh Yang Sering Diburu Para Wisatawan |url=https://pergimulu.com/gunung-di-aceh/#google_vignette |access-date=2024-12-03 |website=PERGIMULU.COM |language=en-US}}

History

In the oral tradition of the Acehnese people, this mountain has a close relationship with the struggle of the Acehnese people against Dutch colonialism. One story states that this mountain was a hiding place for Acehnese fighters during the Aceh War, where they fought against the Dutch with guerrilla tactics that relied on the difficult-to-reach natural terrain, including the sharp slopes of this mountain. Geurutee is also considered a symbol of the struggle and resilience of the Acehnese people.{{Cite web |last=tengkuputeh |date=2020-05-31 |title=LEGENDA ASAL MULA GUNUNG GEURUTEE |url=https://tengkuputeh.com/2020/06/01/legenda-asal-mula-gunung-geurutee/ |access-date=2024-12-03 |website=Tengkuputeh |language=en}}Jukik, Almi (ed.)
