The Gil Vicente Theatre, currently known as Associação de Socorros Mútuos Artística Vimaranense (Mutual Aid and Artistic Association of Guimarães, or ASMAV), is a historic building at the Gil Vicente Street, in Guimarães, Portugal.

History

It was built by the Venetian architect {{ill|Nicola Bigaglia|pt}} sometime between 1888 and 1908{{Cite book |last=Bairrada |first=Eduardo Martins |title=Prémio Valmor: 1902-1952 |publisher=Manuel Rita de Azevedo Martins Bairrada |year=1988 |place=Lisboa |language=pt}} in the Venetian Gothic Revival style, unique in the city.

On 26 February 1866, the ASMAV was installed at the Afonso Henriques Theatre{{Cite web |title=Efeméride de 26-02-1866 · Arquivo da Sociedade Martins Sarmento |trans-title=Event of 26-02-1866 · Martins Sarmento Society archive |url=https://www.csarmento.uminho.pt/site/s/archsms/item/190078 |url-status=live |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20240714182752/https://www.csarmento.uminho.pt/site/s/archsms/item/190078 |archive-date=14 July 2024 |access-date=14 July 2024 |website=csarmento.uminho.pt |language=pt}} and remained there until their headquarters were transferred to the Gil Vicente Theatre a few decades later.{{Cite web |title=Associação de Socorros Mútuos Artística Vimaranense - ASMAV |url=https://em.guimaraes.pt/diretorio/geo_artigo/associacao-de-socorros-mutuos-artistica-vimaranense-asmav |url-status=live |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20240830223918/https://em.guimaraes.pt/diretorio/geo_artigo/associacao-de-socorros-mutuos-artistica-vimaranense-asmav |archive-date=30 August 2024 |access-date=30 August 2024 |website=em.guimaraes.pt}}

The legal dispute between the tenants and owners over who owned the rights to the use of the Gil Vicente Theatre, on 25 July 1935, led to the temporary closure of the only cinema/theatre in the city (at the time), a situation that lasted for the next 18 months.{{cite journal |access-date=2023-11-02 |first=Paulo |last=Cunha |title=Espaços de exibição de cinema em Guimarães: o caso do Cine-Teatro Municipal 1935 (2013) |url=https://www.academia.edu/5854635/Espa%C3%A7os_de_exibi%C3%A7%C3%A3o_de_cinema_em_Guimar%C3%A3es_o_caso_do_Cine_Teatro_Municipal_1935_2013_}} Meanwhile, the cinemaphiles of Guimarães had to satiate their love for cinema in other places, outside the city.

In the early 2000s the ASMAV, after a decline in membership and notability between the 1960s and 1990s that resulted in a shortage of funds and the deterioration of the building, finally restored the asset.

It currently functions both as a retail space and an event venue, hosting activities such as concerts,{{Cite web |last=FPGuimarães |date=2017-06-09 |title=ASMAV recebe o jazz da Orquestra do Douro |url=https://www.fpguimaraes.pt/asmav-recebe-o-jazz-da-orquestra-do-douro/ |access-date=2025-02-05 |website=FreePass Guimarães |language=pt-PT}} theatrical pieces,{{Cite web |last=Guimarães |first=Mais |date=2023-02-24 |title=ASMAV abre portas para celebrar Moncho Rodriguez |url=https://maisguimaraes.pt/asmav-abre-portas-para-celebrar-moncho-rodriguez/ |access-date=2025-02-05 |website=Mais Guimarães |language=pt-PT}} movie screenings,{{Cite web |last=Pina |first=Helena |last2=Martins |first2=Felisbela |last3=Ferreira |first3=Cármen |date=2013 |title=GRANDES PROBLEMÁTICAS DO ESPAÇO EUROPEU |trans-title=THE OVERARCHING ISSUES OF THE EUROPEAN SPACE |url=https://repositorio-aberto.up.pt/bitstream/10216/78814/3/13316.pdf.txt}} political rallies and debates,{{Cite web |last=Guimarães |first=Mais |date=2024-02-19 |title=Mariana Mortágua participa em comício do Bloco de Esquerda em Guimarães |url=https://maisguimaraes.pt/mariana-mortagua-participa-em-comicio-do-bloco-de-esquerda-em-guimaraes/ |access-date=2025-02-05 |website=Mais Guimarães |language=pt-PT}}{{Cite web |title=Legislativas: ASMAV promove debate com os primeiros candidatos |url=https://jornaldeguimaraes.pt/noticias/legislativas-asmav-promove-debate-com-os-primeiros-candidatos/ |access-date=2025-02-05 |website=jornaldeguimaraes.pt}} and the annual Rhetoric Tournament of the Martins Sarmento High School.{{Cite web |title=Escola Secundária Martins Sarmento: Iniciativas – Torneio de Retórica |url=https://www.esmsarmento.pt/categoria.php?cat=525 |access-date=2025-02-05 |website=www.esmsarmento.pt}}
