The Goldman Environmental Prize is a prize awarded annually to grassroots environmental activists.
History
Awardees are named from each of the world's six geographic regions:{{r|usatoday}} Africa, Asia, Europe, Islands and Island Nations, North America, and South and Central America. The award is given by the Goldman Environmental Foundation headquartered in San Francisco, California. The Prize is often referred to as the Green Nobel.{{r|reuters}}
The Goldman Environmental Prize was created in 1989 by philanthropists Richard and Rhoda Goldman.
The winners are selected by an international jury who receive confidential nominations from a worldwide network of environmental organizations and individuals.{{cite news |last1=Fimrite |first1=Peter |title=Goldman Environmental Prize’s 2019 recipients make major strides to save Earth |url=https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/world/goldman-environmental-prize-e2-80-99s-2019-recipients-make-major-strides-to-save-earth/ar-BBWozMz |access-date=April 29, 2019 |work=San Francisco Chronicle |publisher=MSN |date=April 29, 2019}} Prize winners participate in a 10-day tour of San Francisco and Washington, D.C., for an awards ceremony and presentation, news conferences, media briefings and meetings with political, public policy, financial and environmental leaders.{{cite news|title=2009 Goldman Environmental Prize Winners Beat 'Insurmountable' Odds|url=http://www.ens-newswire.com/ens/apr2009/2009-04-20-02.asp|newspaper=Environment News Service|date=April 20, 2009}} The award ceremony features short documentary videos on each winner, narrated by Robert Redford through the year 2020,{{cite news |last1=Smith |first1=Gar |title=The Goldman Environmental Prize Honors Heroes of the Earth |url=http://www.berkeleydailyplanet.com/issue/2019-05-03/article/47574 |access-date=May 15, 2019 |work=The Berkeley Daily Planet |date=May 3, 2019}} and Sigourney Weaver beginning in 2021.{{cite web |title=2021 Goldman Environmental Prize Virtual Award Ceremony |url=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9jjHXRrJq2c |archive-url=https://ghostarchive.org/varchive/youtube/20211221/9jjHXRrJq2c |archive-date=2021-12-21 |url-status=live|website=Goldman Environmental Prize |via=YouTube |access-date=June 15, 2021 |date=June 15, 2021}}{{cbignore}}
