At the mouth of the river is the home of the Long family, known as "New Zealand's most remote family". It is a two-day walk to the nearest civilisation in Haast. Robert Long began living there in 1980.{{cite web |url=http://www.stuff.co.nz/the-press/news/6154265/From-Gorge-River-to-civilisation |title=From Gorge River to civilisation |date=17 December 2011 |work=The Press |publisher=Stuff.co.nz |first=Deidre |last=Mussen}}{{cite web |url=https://www.stuff.co.nz/entertainment/tv-radio/tv-guide/69742208/meet-new-zealands-most-remote-family |title=Meet New Zealand's most remote family |date=2 July 2015 |publisher=Stuff.co.nz}}
