Goulceby village is conjoined with the hamlet of Asterby, both marked on local road signs as one settlement, Goulceby with Asterby, although the two form separate civil parishes.

Goulceby was the birthplace of William Marwood, hangman, who invented the "long drop" system of execution.{{cite web|last=Greenwell |first=Bill |title=William Marwood |url=http://www.billgreenwell.com/lost_lives/index.php?key_id=586 |work=Lost Lives |access-date=13 October 2013 |url-status=dead |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20131006065457/http://www.billgreenwell.com/lost_lives/index.php?key_id=586 |archive-date=6 October 2013 |df=dmy-all }}
