Geography
The area is prone to landslides and its infrastructure and bridges have often been destroyed by hurricanes, and even by heavy rainfall. Puerto Rico Highway 182 goes through this barrio and its sectors.{{cite web | title=Municipio de Yabucoa atiende llamado de familia en Guayabota | website=Periódico El Oriental | date=19 August 2019 | url=http://periodicoeloriental.com/municipios/municipio-de-yabucoa-atiende-llamado-de-familia-en-guayabota/ | language=es | access-date=4 July 2020}}{{cite web | title=Atienden deslizamientos e inundaciones en Yabucoa | website=Periódico El Oriental | date=24 May 2019 | url=http://periodicoeloriental.com/noticias/atienden-deslizamientos-e-inundaciones-en-yabucoa/ | language=es | access-date=4 July 2020}}{{cite news| title=Familias en riesgo de quedarse incomunicadas en Yabucoa | newspaper=El Nuevo Dia | date=24 September 2019 | url=https://www.elnuevodia.com/noticias/locales/nota/familiasenriesgodequedarseincomunicadasenyabucoa-2519762/ | language=es | access-date=4 July 2020}}
=Hurricane Maria=
Hurricane Maria struck the island of Puerto Rico on September 19, 2017, knocking out power to the entire island (and also affected access to clean water). Many older residents of Yabucoa died as a result of Hurricane Maria. The mayor of Yabucoa, Rafael Surillo, stated on June 12, 2018 (nine months after the hurricane) that large swaths of Yabucoa municipality barrios Guayabota, Tejas, Juan Martín, Calabazas, Limones y Aguacate, and 100% of barrio Jácanas were still without electrical power.{{cite web |title=YABUCOA: Enfermos y viejos sin servicio eléctrico |url=http://periodismoinvestigativo.com/2018/06/vidas-de-damnificados-por-maria-aun-penden-de-un-hilo/ |website=Periodísmo Investigativo |publisher=CPI |language=es}} In 2018, the people of Guayabota hoped to develop emergency plans and sustainable community plans to help them be prepared in the case of a future emergency, such as happened with Hurricane Irma and Hurricane Maria.{{cite web | title=Guayabota apuesta al desarrollo sostenible como plan de emergencia | website=Victoria840 | date=11 December 2018 | url=https://www.victoria840.com/guayabota-apuesta-al-desarrollo-sostenible-como-plan-de-emergencia/ | language=es | access-date=4 July 2020}}
