She first got national media attention, when tweeting that she should show the Stabæk manager "some of my other qualities", in order to dethrone Ingrid Hjelmseth as first-choice goalkeeper. The tweet alluded to the Stabæk manager allegedly having a romantic affair with one of the other players. According to the reports, Pettersen got this attention unwillingly because she was hacked.{{cite news|url=https://www.itromso.no/sport/article6417347.ece|title=Skapte Twitter-storm etter sex-melding|last=Eidissen|first=Lars|date=8 October 2012|work=iTromsø|publisher=Hanssen, Kine|language=no|access-date=1 January 2022}}{{cite news|url=https://www.tv2.no/a/3895441|title=Lagvenninnene sto bak Stabæk-keeperens sex-tweet|last=Stokstad|first=Morten|date=8 October 2012|publisher=TV 2|language=no|access-date=1 January 2022}} She was immediately approached by men's magazines to do photo shoots.{{cite news|url=https://www.nordlys.no/fotball/keeper-guro-onskes-som-lettkledd-forsidepike/s/1-79-6276461|title=Keeper-Guro ønskes som lettkledd forsidepike|last=Pettersen|first=Tord Olander|date=9 October 2012|work=Nordlys|language=no|access-date=1 January 2022}} She later alleged that the hosts of a football podcast she was guesting, asked her if she had ever slept with a male professional footballer.
