"Hate Me Now" is the second and final single by rapper Nas featuring Puff Daddy, from Nas' third studio album I Am.... The backbeat is inspired by, and contains some samples from, Carl Orff's "Carmina Burana". It was ranked 119 on XXL's 250 Best Songs of the 1990s.{{cite book|last=XXL Magazine|title=XXL Special Edition "250 Greatest Hip-Hop Songs 1990-1999: Rap's Best Decade Ever|publisher=Harris|year=2011|asin=B0054LSF0W}}

Production and release

In a 2007 interview with Rolling Stone, Nas recalled the making of the song: "It was a track D-Moet produced for Foxy Brown, and she didn't want the record, she didn't like it. It fit with my album, I Am..., so I did the D-Moet track and it sounded perfect for Puff to be on, so I gave it to him, went to the studio, and he rocked it, knocked it out."{{cite magazine |last1=Serpick |first1=Evan |title=Nas' "Greatest Hits": A Track-By-Track Journey |url=https://www.rollingstone.com/music/music-news/nas-greatest-hits-a-track-by-track-journey-85627/ |magazine=Rolling Stone |access-date=April 30, 2020 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20071117120330/http://www.rollingstone.com/news/story/17216041/nas_greatest_hits_a_trackbytrack_journey_with_the_pride_of_queens/print |archive-date=November 17, 2007|url-status=live}}

"Hate Me Now" was released as a single in the U.S. by Columbia Records on April 6, 1999.{{cite web | url=https://www.allmusic.com/album/hate-me-now-mw0000725540/releases | title=Hate Me Now - Nas | Releases | AllMusic | website=AllMusic | access-date=2020-05-01 | archive-date=2023-07-30 | archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20230730060105/https://www.allmusic.com/album/hate-me-now-mw0000725540/releases | url-status=live }}

Composition

Biographer Ronin Ro describes Combs's persona in "Hate Me Now" as "the angry young rapper battling jealous critics," a theme that would influence Combs's 1999 album Forever.{{cite book|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=Zo4J8m93ulcC&q=%22hate+me+now%22|title=Bad Boy: The Influence of Sean "Puffy" Combs on the Music Industry|last=Ro|first=Ronin|page=153|place=New York|publisher=Pocket Books|year=2001|isbn=0-7434-2823-4|via=Google Books}} The beat samples "Carmina Burana" by Carl Orff.{{cite news|url=https://www.nytimes.com/1999/06/14/arts/not-medieval-but-eternal-in-its-sixth-decade-carmina-burana-still-echoes.html|title=Not Medieval but Eternal; In Its Sixth Decade, 'Carmina Burana' Still Echoes|last=Powers|first=Ann|work=The New York Times|date=June 14, 1999|page=E1|access-date=April 30, 2020|archive-date=October 21, 2020|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20201021071514/https://www.nytimes.com/1999/06/14/arts/not-medieval-but-eternal-in-its-sixth-decade-carmina-burana-still-echoes.html|url-status=live}}

Critical reception

For RapReviews.com, Steve Juon said that "Hate Me Now" was the "only truly overpowering song" from I Am...: "It may be yet another mad track about playa hating, but the rebuttal of the hate is crisp and well defined - owing little to cliche."{{cite web |last1=Juon |first1=Steve |title=Nas: I Am... |url=https://www.rapreviews.com/archive/1999_04_iamnas.html |website=RapReviews.com |access-date=April 30, 2020 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20010110202600/https://www.rapreviews.com/archive/1999_04_iamnas.html |archive-date=January 10, 2001 |date=April 1999 |url-status=live}} In 2013, Complex ranked the "Hate Me Now" video no. 8 in its "50 Best Rap Videos of the '90s" list.{{cite web |last1=Baker |first1=Ernest|display-authors=etal |title=The 50 Best Rap Videos of the '90s |url=https://www.complex.com/music/2013/02/the-50-best-rap-videos-of-the-90s/nas-puff-daddy-hate-me-now |website=Complex |access-date=April 30, 2020 |date=February 24, 2013}}

Music video and Sean Combs assault incident

The music video for the single, directed by Hype Williams and featuring Nas being crucified, was the subject of extreme controversy, as the original edit also featured Sean Combs, then known as Puff Daddy, on the cross.{{cite news |url=http://www.xxlmag.com/news/hip-hop-today/2014/04/nas-controversial-hate-now-video-trl/ |title=Today In Hip-Hop: Nas Premiered Controversial "Hate Me Now" Video On TRL |date=15 April 2014 |access-date=12 August 2014 |publisher=XXL |archive-date=11 August 2014 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20140811170054/http://www.xxlmag.com/news/hip-hop-today/2014/04/nas-controversial-hate-now-video-trl/ |url-status=live }} Puffy, who was a Catholic, had demanded that his crucifixion scene be excluded from the broadcast edit of the video.
