Critical reception
Robert Christgau wrote that "Leroy Hodges's famous bottom keeps the record flowing like none of Green's other Jesus LPs, but it's still songs that make or break--and in this case do neither." Rolling Stone declared that "the only great new Al Green song here is 'Power', which builds on 'Jesus Is Waiting' and 'Have You Been Making Out O.K.' but claims its own space in the pantheon."{{Cite magazine|url=https://www.rollingstone.com/music/music-album-reviews/he-is-the-light-251189/|title=He Is the Light|first1=Davitt|last1=Sigerson|magazine=Rolling Stone|date=January 30, 1986}} The Globe and Mail called He Is the Light "a gorgeous record: spare, crisp production, and tunes that haunt you."{{cite news |last1=Lacey |first1=Liam |title=INSIDE THE SLEEVE POP He Is The Light Al Green |work=The Globe and Mail |date=5 Dec 1985 |page=D5}}
