Hendrik "Henk" de Haan ({{IPA|nl|ˈɦɛŋk də ˈɦaːn|lang}}; born 8 April 1941) is a Dutch economist and politician of the Christian Democratic Appeal (CDA). He served as member of the House of Representatives from December 1996 until November 2006, while he was a professor at the University of Groningen.
Life and career
De Haan was born in 1941 in Nijmegen. He joined the academic staff of the University of Groningen's economics faculty in 1966, and he became a lecturer on international economic relations in 1971. He was appointed professor at the university two years later with the same specialization.{{Cite web |url = https://www.parlement.com/id/vg09llpsgcwj/biografie/h_henk_de_haan |title = Prof.Dr. H. He argued that change would only come if the United Kingdom and West Germany, two major trading partners, increased pressure on South Africa – something the Dutch government should advocate for.{{Cite news |url = https://resolver.kb.nl/resolve?urn=ddd:010566948:mpeg21:a0230 |agency = Inter Press Service |via = Delpher |access-date = 18 February 2025 |newspaper = Leeuwarder Courant |language = nl |date = 3 May 1989 |title = CDA-denktank wil hardere sancties tegen Zuid-Africa |trans-title = CDA think tank wants tougher sanctions against South Africa }}
After having moved to Lettelbert, De Haan ran for the House of Representatives in the May 1994 general election as the CDA's 39th candidate.{{Cite news |url = https://resolver.kb.nl/resolve?urn=ddd:011020407:mpeg21:a0278 |via = Delpher |access-date = 18 February 2025 |newspaper = Nieuwsblad van het Noorden |language = nl |date = 5 November 1993 |title = De Haan is niet verbaasd en Paas niet teleurgesteld |trans-title = De Haan is not surprised and Paas not disappointed }}{{Cite news |url = https://resolver.kb.nl/resolve?urn=ddd:011020474:mpeg21:a0184 |via = Delpher |access-date = 18 February 2025 |newspaper = Nieuwsblad van het Noorden |language = nl |date = 27 January 1994 |title = Koetje weer paar plaatsen hoger bij CDA |trans-title = Koetje again ranked a few places higher for CDA }} He was not elected, as his party won 34 seats. When Wim Deetman left the House to become mayor of The Hague, De Haan succeeded him on 3 December 1996, while staying on as professor.{{Cite web |url = https://zoek.officielebekendmakingen.nl/h-tk-19961997-2890-2901.html |website = Overheid.nl |access-date = 18 February 2025 |language = nl |date = 12 December 1996 |title = Handeling |trans-title = Proceedings |publisher = House of Representatives |pages = 2890–2901 }} He was re-elected in 1998, 2002, and 2003, and he served as the CDA's spokesperson for foreign affairs, finances, economic affairs, and development cooperation. He was vice chair of the Committee for Finances (1998–2002), chair of the Committees for Foreign Affairs (2002–2006) and Economic Affairs (2006), and he was part of the House's delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE). In May 2000, De Haan urged the government to prevent Greece from entering the eurozone, but his motion was defeated, being supported only by Christian parties. He had been critical of a European economic and monetary union, and he believed that Greece was misrepresenting the state of its public finances. His motion received renewed attention in the early 2010s, when Greek government debt was the highest of any eurozone country during the euro area crisis.{{Cite magazine |magazine = Elsevier Weekblad |language = nl |title = Voormalig CDA-Kamerlid Henk de Haan stemde in 2000 tegen de toetreding van de Grieken tot de euro |trans-title = Former CDA MP Henk de Haan voted in 2000 against Greece's accession to the euro |date = 4 June 2011 |page = 53 |volume = 67 |number = 22 |last = Willems |first = Philip }}{{Cite interview |url = https://www.nd.nl/nieuws/economie/768132/kamer-liet-nee-tegen-grieken-lopen |date = 24 May 2011 |interviewer = Ruurd Ubels |first = Henk |last = De Haan |access-date = 18 February 2025 |language = nl |website = Nederlands Dagblad |title = Kamer liet nee tegen Grieken lopen |trans-title = House let no to the Greeks go by }}{{Cite news |url = https://eenvandaag.avrotros.nl/item/de-man-die-waarschuwde-voor-griekenland/ |date = 14 June 2011 |last = Vermeulen |first = Guido |access-date = 18 February 2025 |language = nl |website = EenVandaag |title = De man die waarschuwde voor Griekenland |trans-title = The man who warned for Greece }}{{Cite news |url = https://www.rtvnoord.nl/nieuws/151435/hoogleraar-als-de-grieken-nee-zeggen-gebeurt-er-een-ramp |date = 13 July 2015 |access-date = 18 February 2025 |language = nl |website = RTV Noord |title = Hoogleraar: 'Als de Grieken nee zeggen, gebeurt er een ramp!' |trans-title = Professor: 'If the Greek say no, a disaster will occur!' }}{{Cite interview |last = De Haan |first = Henk |newspaper = Metro |language = nl |page = 5 |date = 17 July 2015 |title = De man die in 2000 al waarschuwde voor Griekse toestanden |trans-title = The man who already warned in 2000 about Greek issues }} De Haan's membership of the House ended on 29 November 2006, the year after he had left the University of Groningen. He later served as chair of the Dutch Group Friends of a Free Iran.{{Cite news |url = https://www.rtvnoord.nl/nieuws/73052/de-haan-het-gaat-niemand-iets-aan-wat-ik-doe |date = 25 April 2008 |access-date = 18 February 2025 |language = nl |website = RTV Noord |title = De Haan: 'Het gaat niemand iets aan wat ik doe' |trans-title = De Haan: 'It's nobody's business what I do' }}
When in July 2010 the parliamentary group of the CDA agreed to engage in talks to form a governing coalition with the right-wing populist Party for Freedom (PVV), De Haan voiced his opposition to such a cooperation. The resulting first Rutte cabinet that included the VVD and CDA received confidence and supply from the PVV.{{Cite interview |url = https://dvhn.nl/archief/Oud-CDA-kamerlid-Henk-de-Haan-fel-gekant-tegen-kabinet-met-PVV-20643708.html |last = De Haan |first = Henk |url-access = subscription |date = 29 July 2010 |access-date = 18 February 2025 |language = nl |website = Dagblad van het Noorden |title = Oud-CDA-kamerlid Henk de Haan fel gekant tegen kabinet met PVV |trans-title = Former CDA MP Henk de Haan fiercely opposed to cabinet with PVV }}{{Cite news |url = https://www.nu.nl/politiek/2294302/kabinetsformatie-2010.html |date = 16 July 2010 |last = Benschop |first = Lucas |access-date = 18 February 2025 |language = nl |website = NU.nl |title = Kabinetsformatie 2010 |trans-title = 2010 cabinet formation }}
