"Higher Ground" is a song written by Stevie Wonder which first appeared on his 1973 album Innervisions. Background

The song lyrics address the issue of reincarnation. Wonder commented, when interviewed by The New York Times:

I would like to believe in reincarnation. I would like to believe that there is another life. I think that sometimes your consciousness can happen on this earth a second time around. For me, I wrote "Higher Ground" even before the accident. But something must have been telling me that something was going to happen to make me aware of a lot of things and to get myself together. This is like my second chance for life, to do something or to do more, and to value the fact that I am alive.{{cite web|url=http://bigamericannight.com/midnight_hit/jesus-children/|title=Big American Night - Holy Roller|publisher=bigamericannight.com|access-date=January 7, 2015|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20150108010549/http://bigamericannight.com/midnight_hit/jesus-children/|archive-date=January 8, 2015|url-status=usurped}}

According to Billboard, the lyrics are about "people who are moving ahead in love and in all phases of life."{{cite news|title=Top Single Picks|newspaper=Billboard|access-date=2020-07-25|date=August 11, 1973|url=https://worldradiohistory.com/Archive-Billboard/70s/1973/Billboard%201973-08-11.pdf|page=71}}

The unique wah-wah clavinet sound in the song was achieved with a Mu-Tron III envelope filter pedal.{{Cite web |url=https://www.vintageguitar.com/18626/mike-beigel/ |title=Mike Beigel: Resurrection of the Mu-Tron III |first=Michael |last=Dregni |website=vintageguitar.com |date= January 11, 2016|accessdate=5 April 2021}} The bass line is provided by a Moog synthesizer programmed by co-producers Malcolm Cecil and Robert Margouleff. Using overdubs, Wonder played clavinet, drums and percussion in addition to singing the vocals.Wonder, Stevie. “Innervisions” (Liner Notes). Tamla Motown. 1973.

On August 21, 2024, Wonder performed "Higher Ground" at the 2024 Democratic National Convention in support of Vice President Kamala Harris and her campaign to become the next President of the United States in the 2024 United States presidential election.{{cite news|url=https://www.forbes.com/sites/monicamercuri/2024/08/21/stevie-wonder-and-john-legend-bring-star-power-to-dnc-day-3-watch-all-the-performances/|title=Watch Stevie Wonder And John Legend Perform At The DNC Day 3|newspaper=Forbes|date=August 21, 2024}}

Critical reception

In its contemporary review, Cash Box said the song "is further evidence of [Wonder's] inner genius."{{cite news|title=CashBox Record Reviews|date=August 11, 1973|page=18|accessdate=2021-12-11|url=https://worldradiohistory.com/Archive-All-Music/Cash-Box/70s/1973/Cash-Box-1973-08-11.pdf|newspaper=Cash Box}} Record World called it a "chunky item that has all the feel and finesse of 'Superstition.'"{{cite magazine|magazine=Record World|date=August 18, 1973|accessdate=2023-03-22|title=Hits of the Week|page=1|url=https://worldradiohistory.com/Archive-All-Music/Record-World/70s/73/RW-1973-08-18.pdf}}

In 2004, Rolling Stone ranked the song number 261 on its list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time, was re-ranked at number 265 in 2010, and re-ranked at number 113 in 2021, adding: "'Higher Ground' was recorded just before Wonder was involved in a near-fatal accident in August 1973 that left him in a coma. Early in Wonder's recovery, his road manager sang the song's melody into the singer's ear; Wonder responded by moving his fingers with the music."{{cite magazine|url= https://www.rollingstone.com/music/lists/the-500-greatest-songs-of-all-time-20110407/stevie-wonder-higher-ground-20110526
