The Hollywood Film Awards were an American motion picture award ceremony held annually from 1997 to 2019, usually in October or November. It was founded by Carlos de Abreu and his wife Janice Pennington. The gala ceremony took place at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, California. The 2014 ceremony, broadcast by CBS, was the first to be shown on television.{{cite web |url=http://www.thewrap.com/hollywood-film-awards-slowly-killing-the-golden-goose/ |title=Hollywood Film Awards: Slowly Killing the Golden Goose |last=Waxman |first=Sharon |date=November 16, 2014 |work=TheWrap |access-date=December 4, 2014}}{{cite web |url=http://www.cbsnews.com/news/hollywood-film-awards-2014-winners/ |title=Hollywood Film Awards 2014 winners |last=Moraski |first=Lauren |date=November 14, 2014 |work=CBS News |access-date=December 4, 2014}} The 2016 ceremony, celebrating its 20th anniversary, took place on November 6, and was hosted by James Corden.{{cite web | url=http://www.hollywoodawards.com/2016/09/james-corden-returns-host-20th-annual-hfas/ | title=James Corden Returns as Host for the 20th Annual HFAs | date=September 14, 2016 | publisher=Hollywood Film Awards | access-date=October 28, 2016}}{{cite web |url=https://variety.com/2016/film/news/hollywood-film-awards-robert-de-niro-natalie-portman-support-hillary-clinton-1201911295/ |title=Hollywood Film Awards: Robert De Niro, Natalie Portman Support Hillary Clinton on Eve of Election |date=6 November 2016 |last=Yee |first=Lawrence |publisher=Variety |access-date=2 December 2016}}
The awards became known for being given to films that have yet to be released and for a lack of transparency in the selection process.{{cite news|last=Whipp|first=Glenn|date=November 14, 2014|url=https://www.latimes.com/entertainment/movies/la-et-mn-hollywood-film-awards-cbs-20141114-column.html|title=Hollywood Film Awards and dubious history land in prime time|work=Los Angeles Times|access-date=July 18, 2020}}{{cite news|last=Feinberg|first=Scott|date=November 15, 2014|url=https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/race/hollywood-film-awards-what-went-749447|title=Hollywood Film Awards: What Went Down and Why It Mattered|work=The Hollywood Reporter|access-date=July 18, 2020}}{{cite news|last=Cohen|first=Sandy|date=November 15, 2014|url=https://apnews.com/e3c28f06d1f642cab59db8bae3ad19f3|title=Stars serious and silly at Hollywood Film Awards|publisher=Associated Press|access-date=July 18, 2020}} The Los Angeles Times stated, "the selection process could be charitably described as 'vague,' with the primary criteria being the winners' promise to attend the ceremony."
