Background and release

In December 2003, drummer Neil Sanderson confirmed that "Home" would be released as the album Three Days Grace's next single,{{cite web|url=https://www.ign.com/articles/2003/12/09/three-days-grace-interview|title=Three Days Grace Interview|website=IGN|author=Dave Doray|date=December 9, 2003|access-date=February 16, 2024}} however, Three Days Grace released "Just Like You" as the second single.{{cite magazine|url=https://worldradiohistory.com/Archive-RandR/2000s/2004/RR-2004-03-26.pdf |title=Going for Adds |magazine=Radio & Records |issue=1548 |page=31 |date=March 26, 2004 |access-date=February 16, 2024}} The song was eventually released as the third single from the album on October 4.{{cite magazine|url=https://worldradiohistory.com/Archive-RandR/2000s/2004/RR-2004-10-01.pdf |title=Going for Adds |magazine=Radio & Records |issue=1575 |page=20 |date=October 1, 2004 |access-date=June 19, 2021}} Speaking with MTV, Sanderson explained the song's meaning and said, "It's about being pushed around and neglected and feeling like even though you're in the company of other people, they're not really there at all."{{cite web|url=https://www.mtv.com/news/1492032/three-days-grace-endure-fire-asbestos-for-their-art/|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20141021031004/http://www.mtv.com/news/1492032/three-days-grace-endure-fire-asbestos-for-their-art/|url-status=dead|archive-date=October 21, 2014|title=Three Days Grace Endure Fire, Asbestos For Their Art|website=MTV|author=Jon Wiederhorn|date=October 7, 2004|access-date=June 29, 2022}}

Lead vocalist Adam Gontier stated that "Home" was his favorite song from Three Days Grace: "['Home'] hits a spot with me. It's a fun song to play live as well. It's tough to pick a favorite, but because of the amount of energy we give it live, I'd say it's 'Home.'"{{cite web|url=http://www.floridaentertainmentscene.com/music/artists/three_days_grace/interview.htm |title=Interview with Adam Gontier of Three Days Grace |last=Montes |first=Michael |year=2004 |publisher=Florida Entertainment Scene |url-status=dead |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20090116054817/http://www.floridaentertainmentscene.com/music/artists/three_days_grace/interview.htm |archive-date=January 16, 2009 |access-date=November 19, 2008}}

It was nominated for Song of the Year: Alternative/Active Rock Radio at the 2005 Radio Music Awards and won a BDS Spin Award based on the 100,000 spins it received in September 2005.{{cite web|url=https://www.allaccess.com/net-news/archive/story/2515/2005-radio-music-awards-nominees-announced|title=2005 Radio Music Awards Nominees Announced|website=All Access Mediabase|date=November 4, 2005|access-date=April 10, 2022}}{{cite web|url=https://worldradiohistory.com/Archive-All-Music/Billboard/00s/2005/BB-2005-09-24.pdf|title=BB-2005-09-24|page=54|access-date=April 26, 2022}} A promotional CD featuring the song and an interview with the band was included as a bonus with the Lords of EverQuest strategy guide published by Prima Games in 2003.{{cite web |url=https://archive.org/details/lordsofeverquest00chin/page/n3 |title=Lords of EverQuest : Prima's official strategy guide |publisher=Internet Archive |date=September 3, 2010 |access-date=March 4, 2020}}

Composition

"Home" was written by Gontier and was produced by Gavin Brown.{{cite web|url=https://www.ultimate-guitar.com/news/interviews/three_days_grace_singer_new_cd_is_about_somebody_i_dont_want_to_be.html|title=Three Days Grace Singer: New CD 'Is About Somebody I Don't Want To Be'|website=Ultimate Guitar|author=Steve Rosen|access-date=July 12, 2023}} According to the sheet music published at Musicnotes.com, by Alfred Music Publishing, the track runs at 84 BPM and is in the key of D minor.{{cite web|url=https://www.musicnotes.com/sheetmusic/mtd.asp?ppn=MN0126040|title=Three Days Grace "Home" Sheet Music|website=musicnotes.com|publisher=Alfred Music Publishing|access-date=April 13, 2025}} Gontier explained how the song came together in an interview with Ultimate Guitar.

{{quote|"We wrote 'Home' and it had a pretty heavy opening riff. And I think between us and Gavin, our producer, I think we decided that we wanted some kind of melody that was done with the guitar, over the top of the opening riff because it needed something. Basically, we'd just mess around in the studio with different ideas, different lead parts that might sound cool. And what ended up happening, was that high-pitch guitar lead that you hear at the beginning of 'Home'."}}

Music video

The original promotional video was shot as a montage of the band playing on tour accompanied by the song. It held little to no success and was not charted on MuchMusic's Countdown due to its low rotation.{{cite web|url=http://www.threedaysgrace.com/news.php|title=More videos of 3DG on the road!|website=threedaysgrace.com|date=July 2, 2004|archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20040710132151/http://www.threedaysgrace.com/news.php|archivedate=July 10, 2004|access-date=March 3, 2024}}

The second and more familiar video, directed by Dean Karr was released in October 2004. It was shot in Hamilton, Ontario at the then-abandoned Lister Block in September 2004.{{cite web|url=http://www.threedaysgrace.com/news.php|title=New video for "Home"|website=threedaysgrace.com|date=September 11, 2004|archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20040917004717/http://www.threedaysgrace.com/news.php|archivedate=September 17, 2004|access-date=March 3, 2024}} Speaking about the music video, Sanderson stated, "We did it in this asbestos-filled condemned building, and my lungs haven't been the same since. The video is pretty wild. There's a creature haunting this house that we're playing in, and there are a lot of metaphoric images that relate directly back to the lyrics." The video reached number one on the MuchMusic Countdown.{{cite web|url=http://www.threedaysgrace.com/news.php|title="Home" #1 on MuchMusic|website=threedaysgrace.com|date=January 24, 2005|archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20050218100042/http://www.threedaysgrace.com/news.php|archivedate=February 18, 2005|access-date=March 3, 2024}}
