History

The station's name matches that of the locality on which the suburb was built. Elizabeth Hopper was a gatekeeper, closing and re-opening a set of large timber level crossing gates whenever a train passed through. She and her husband, Stephen Hopper (1832-1908), a railway ganger, lived nearby with their eleven children.[https://levelcrossings.vic.gov.au/media/news/in-a-nod-to-history-the-hoppers-take-a-tour In a nod to history, the Hoppers take a tour] {{Webarchive|url=https://web.archive.org/web/20211021101616/https://levelcrossings.vic.gov.au/media/news/in-a-nod-to-history-the-hoppers-take-a-tour |date=21 October 2021 }} Level Crossing Removal Project

The original station was located on the down (Werribee) side of the former Old Geelong Road level crossing. Problems with stationary trains blocking the level crossing{{cite magazine|date=July 1980|title=Works|magazine=Newsrail|publisher=Australian Railway Historical Society|page=160}} led to the station being relocated to the up (Flinders Street) side of the crossing in July 1983, in conjunction with the electrification of the line to Werribee. Also in that year, boom barriers were provided at the former level crossing.

On 4 May 2010, as part of the 2010/2011 State Budget, $83.7 million was allocated to upgrade Hoppers Crossing to a premium station, along with nineteen others.{{cite web|url=https://www.smh.com.au/national/new-premium-stations-for-metro-20100504-u4pf.html|title=New premium stations for Metro|publisher=Sydney Morning Herald|date=4 May 2010|accessdate=19 February 2023|archive-date=18 February 2023|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20230218121102/https://www.smh.com.au/national/new-premium-stations-for-metro-20100504-u4pf.html|url-status=live}}{{cite magazine|date=June 2010|title=General News|magazine=Newsrail|publisher=Australian Railway Historical Society|page=165}} However, in March 2011, this was scrapped by the Baillieu Government.{{cite web|first1=Ashley|last1=Gardiner|first2=Anne|last2=Wright|url=https://www.heraldsun.com.au/news/victoria/overhaul-call-on-guards-with-guns-at-melbourne-train-stations/news-story/2790408f8e6b55eb3d32fc40180a39a9|title=Premier Ted Baillieu says armed guards will create 'culture of safety'|publisher=Herald Sun|date=25 March 2011|accessdate=18 February 2023|archive-date=6 September 2020|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20200906120513/https://www.heraldsun.com.au/news/victoria/overhaul-call-on-guards-with-guns-at-melbourne-train-stations/news-story/2790408f8e6b55eb3d32fc40180a39a9|url-status=live}}
