"I Know Places" is a song by the American singer-songwriter Taylor Swift from her fifth studio album, 1989 (2014). She wrote the song with Ryan Tedder, and the two produced it with Noel Zancanella. A trip hop and drum and bass song with influences of reggae and trap in its instrumentation, "I Know Places" is about a couple's struggle with public scrutiny. Music critics generally praised the composition and imagery of "I Know Places", with some deeming it one of 1989{{'s}} most vulnerable and underrated tracks, although a handful of them deemed it a weaker track in her discography.
"I Know Places" received gold certifications in Australia and the United States. Swift performed the song on the 1989 World Tour (2015) and as a surprise number in select shows in her future tours. Following a 2019 dispute over her masters, Swift re-recorded the song as "I Know Places (Taylor's Version)" for her fourth re-recorded studio album, 1989 (Taylor's Version) (2023). Critics praised its increase in power in Swift's vocals compared to the original version.
Background and writing
The American singer-songwriter Taylor Swift abandoned the country stylings of her past music and embraced a pop production for her fifth studio album, 1989 (2014), which she marketed as her "first official" pop album.{{cite magazine |last=Light |first=Alan |author-link=Alan Light |date=December 5, 2014 |title=Billboard Woman of the Year Taylor Swift on Writing Her Own Rules, Not Becoming a Cliche and the Hurdle of Going Pop |url=https://www.billboard.com/articles/events/women-in-music-2014/6363514/billboard-woman-of-the-year-taylor-swift-on-writing-her |url-status=live |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20141226012450/https://www.billboard.com/articles/events/women-in-music-2014/6363514/billboard-woman-of-the-year-taylor-swift-on-writing-her |archive-date=December 26, 2014 |access-date=February 27, 2019 |magazine=Billboard}} Her musical inspiration was 1980s synth-pop and its experimentation with synthesizers, drum pads, and overlapped vocals.{{cite magazine |last=Eells |first=Josh |date=September 16, 2014 |title=Taylor Swift Reveals Five Things to Expect on 1989 |url=https://www.rollingstone.com/music/music-features/taylor-swift-reveals-five-things-to-expect-on-1989-65750/ |url-access=limited |url-status=live |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20181116173655/https://www.rollingstone.com/music/music-features/taylor-swift-reveals-five-things-to-expect-on-1989-65750/ |archive-date=November 16, 2018 |access-date=November 16, 2018 |magazine=Rolling Stone}}{{cite web |last=Zollo |first=Paul |author-link=Paul Zollo |date=February 13, 2016 |title=The Oral History of Taylor Swift's 1989 |url=https://medium.com/cuepoint/the-oral-history-of-taylor-swift-s-1989-d9869cc13adc?sf22314340=1#.cd4wstjmz |url-status=live |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20160404113417/https://medium.com/cuepoint/the-oral-history-of-taylor-swift-s-1989-d9869cc13adc?sf22314340=1#.cd4wstjmz |archive-date=April 4, 2016 |access-date=March 23, 2016 |publisher=The Recording Academy |via=Medium}} She began writing the album in mid–2013 while touring in support of her fourth album, Red (2012),{{cite news |last=Talbott |first=Chris |date=October 13, 2013 |title=Taylor Swift Talks Next Album, CMAs and Ed Sheeran |url=http://bigstory.ap.org/article/taylor-swift-talks-next-album-cmas-and-ed-sheeran |url-status=live |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20131026093555/http://bigstory.ap.org/article/taylor-swift-talks-next-album-cmas-and-ed-sheeran |archive-date=October 26, 2013 |access-date=October 26, 2013 |agency=Associated Press}} and enlisted prominent contemporary pop producers including Ryan Tedder, whom she contacted via a Voice Memo.{{Cite magazine |last=Leight |first=Elias |date=January 12, 2021 |title=10 Great Songs You Didn't Know OneRepublic's Ryan Tedder Wrote |url=https://www.rollingstone.com/music/music-lists/10-great-songs-you-didnt-know-onerepublics-ryan-tedder-wrote-250513/ |url-access=limited |url-status=live |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20190531102805/https://www.rollingstone.com/music/music-lists/10-great-songs-you-didnt-know-onerepublics-ryan-tedder-wrote-250513/ |archive-date=May 31, 2019 |access-date=August 22, 2023 |magazine=Rolling Stone}}{{cite web |last=Perricone |first=Kathleen |date=October 20, 2014 |title=Taylor Swift Gives Details on Recording 'I Know Places' With Ryan Tedder |url=http://www.at40.com/news-article/taylor-swift-gives-details-on-recording-i-know-places-with-ryan-tedder/33459 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20150119234653/http://www.at40.com/news-article/taylor-swift-gives-details-on-recording-i-know-places-with-ryan-tedder/33459 |archive-date=January 19, 2015 |work=American Top 40 |access-date=October 4, 2024}} In that voice memo, Swift sang a demo of the chorus while playing a piano.{{Cite web |last=Van Der Veen |first=Danica |date=April 7, 2015 |title=GLAM Chat: Taylor Swift |url=https://www.glamour.co.za/lifestyle/glam-chat-taylor-swift-17301179 |access-date=2024-09-12 |website=Glamour |language=en |archive-date=October 3, 2024 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20241003092015/https://www.glamour.co.za/lifestyle/glam-chat-taylor-swift-17301179 |url-status=live }}
During the production of 1989, Swift faced a lot of media scrutiny, which she said put her in a place where "no one is going to sign up for [a relationship]". Swift stated, "There are just too many cameras pointed at me. There are too many ridiculous elaborations about my life". She stated that she wrote "I Know Places" after fantasizing about a relationship in which she "[met] someone awesome, and they were like, hey, I'm worried about all this attention you get", with Swift responding, "Hey, I know places we can hide.
