I guess we have that motorik, engine-like drive in the rhythm section that some post punk bands have, but we have plenty of songs that aren't like that at all."

Politics and activism

Idles have been described as a "post-Brexit" political rock band.{{Cite news |last=Beaumont |first=Mark |date=2017-04-06 |title=Post-Brexit punk and austerity anthems - 2017's political rock resurgence |url=https://www.theguardian.com/music/musicblog/2017/apr/06/post-brexit-punk-austerity-anthems-2017-political-rock-resurgence |access-date=2024-12-03 |work=The Guardian|issn=0261-3077}} Their songs include political messages on a diverse range of topics including feminism, mass media and immigration. British newspaper The Guardian wrote in 2024 that "the subjects the band sparred with along the way ranged from white privilege to Brexit to immigration to class, with a special wallop reserved for the crueler aspects of traditional masculinity".{{Cite news |last=Farber |first=Jim |date=2024-02-13 |title=The return of Idles: 'I don't have to hide behind violence any more' |url=https://www.theguardian.com/music/2024/feb/13/idles-band-interview-new-album-tangk |access-date=2024-12-03 |work=The Guardian|issn=0261-3077}}

In November 2023, just over a month after the beginning of the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza, English punk-duo Bob Vylan criticised Idles as well as English punk-duo Sleaford Mods for not speaking about the Palestinian cause, saying at a concert in Dublin "How the fuck can you call yourself a political left-wing band if you are not fucking speaking up for people that have no voice at the moment? It’s a cowardly fucking thing".{{Cite web |last=Dunworth |first=Liberty |date=2023-11-10 |title=Bob Vylan call out "cowardly" Sleaford Mods and IDLES for not speaking out on Palestine |url=https://www.nme.com/news/music/bob-vylan-call-out-cowardly-sleaford-mods-and-idles-for-not-speaking-out-on-palestine-3536053 |access-date=2024-12-03 |website=NME}} Subsequently, Joe Talbot voiced support for Palestine at the launch show for the album Tangk, by changing lyrics to include references to Palestine, with guitarist Mark Bowen also leading chants of "ceasefire now".{{Cite web |last=Trendell |first=Andrew |date=2024-02-17 |title=Idles show solidarity with Palestine at 'Tangk' launch show in Brixton |url=https://www.nme.com/news/music/idles-show-solidarity-with-palestine-at-tangk-launch-show-in-brixton-3588996 |access-date=2024-12-03 |website=NME }} Since then, the band have continuously spoken about the topic, including during their set at the 2024 Glastonbury Festival.{{Cite web |date=2024-06-28 |title=Glastonbury 2024: Idles dedicate song to "people of Palestine" |url=https://faroutmagazine.co.uk/glastonbury-2024-idles-declare-support-for-the-people-of-palestine/ |access-date=2024-12-03 |website=faroutmagazine.co.uk}}
